The Ulan-Ude Aviation Plant started fulfilling the contract on delivering 24 Mi-171 helicopters to China, with the total cost of the contract amounting to about $200 million, a source in the Russian Defense Industry told Interfax-Military News Agency.

"The contract on delivering 24 Mi-171s to China was signed in late 2005. Its cost amounts to about $200 million," he said.

He noted that the Ulan-Ude Aviation Plant, which had already embarked on producing the helicopters, had been appointed chief contractor. According to the source, the Chinese contract is of paramount importance to the Ulan-Ude Plant, since it provides the plant with enough work for at least 2006.

"China will receive civil versions of the helicopter. The first ones will be delivered to the customer in the near future, while the entire contract is expected to be fulfilled by the turn of 2006," the source said.

The Mi-171 utility transport helicopter is a Mi-8-family helicopter and a derivative of the Mi-17. It was designed by the “Mil” Design Bureau, and has been batch-produced at the Ulan-Ude Aviation Plant since 1990. The passenger modification of the helicopter is capable of transporting 26 men, while the cargo version can airlift up to 4,000 kg of internally and externally mounted cargo.

The Mi-171 is capable of airlifting bulky cargo with its rear doors stripped, carrying out various mounting and loading tasks, conducting search-and-rescue operations, and fulfilling other tasks.

The helicopter is fitted with state-of-the-art navigation equipment, enabling it to conduct instrument flights.

The helicopter has a three-man crew, a maximum takeoff weight of 13,000 kg, a service ceiling of 6,000 m with a standard weight of 11,100 kg, and 4,800 m with the maximum weight. It has a range of 610 km with main fuel tanks, and 1,650 m with two additional fuel tanks. Its maximum speed totals 250 km/h.

Because z8 are obviously not getting produced at any significant rate. And they're costlier to maintain. Cause china already has developed fundations for mi17 support. And finally cause its severely lacking heavy helicopter lift ability. Even with z8 being produced at some 20-30 a year it'd still not be enough. 200 heavy lift helicopters for a country like china is simply not nearly enough. Especially if they want to use them to haul troops and equipment to taiwan during an invasion.

Sorry to dig out this old thread but i was wondering what happened to the intention to build 80/year of these as of 2008? That should have given China 240 plus the ones they procured fully assembled but i haven't heard anything other than the couple of civilian ones they delivered.Has the Z8 production superceded it as the previous posts are hinting at? Or has there been contract rows that ceased production? Why no sign of a navalised one either from China? Is it indeed going to schedule? They planned to export them too.It seems i've missed the update. Does anyone have any information on this? Thanks in advance.

hmm, they got a few more Mi-17 variants, but I don't think they ever really continued with the co-production of Mi-171. Z-8 production has definitely increased, but I don't know what it is exactly. btw, you can check Mi-17 related news in the helo thread.

Rosoboronexport completes deliveries of Mi-171E helicopters to China
Thursday July 3, 2014
Rosoboronexport completes deliveries of final batch of Mi-171E transport helicopters to China. The vehicles are being delivered to the customer under a contract between Poly Technologies (China) and Rosoboronexport for delivery of 52 helicopters of the type signed in 2012, ITAR-TASS reports with reference to Russian Helicopters Holding Company.

In the network of this agreement 32 helicopters of the type were delivered to China in 2013 and the final batch comprising 20 vehicles is being delivered to the customer in 2014.

The new Mi-171Es manufactured by Ulan-Ude Aviation Plant (part of Russian Helicopters Holding Company), are fitted with equipment improving the vehicle’s performance in high mountain regions. They are powered by uprated VK-2500 engines and fitted with Safir auxiliary power unit, upgraded transmission, searchlight, internal fuel tanks and seats for the troops.

The loading ramp and additional sliding door on the right side increase the efficiency of transport missions.

Chinese crews have successfully completed training at the training center of Ulan-Ude Aviation Plant. Today China operates around 150 Mi-171 Family helicopters.

In addition Russian Helicopters Holding Company (subsidiary of Oboronprom Corporation, part of State Corporation Rostec) and Lectern Aviation Supplies (China) have signed a contract for delivery of Mi-26TS heavy transport helicopters. They are for civilian use but I have no doubt that in times of real need these helicopters would be taken over by the military.

I think it is not against the rules but still kind of strange to reply to one’s own post. Anyway:

Russian Helicopters completes delivery of 52 Mi-171E helicopters to China July 16, 2014

Russian Helicopters, a subsidiary of Oboronprom, part of State Corporation Rostec, announces that Ulan-Ude Aviation Plant has delivered four Mi-171E transport helicopters to China’s Poly Technologies, the final consignment of a contract for 48 helicopters signed by Rosoboronexport in 2012. In total under the original contract and a follow-on agreement the Chinese company has received 52 helicopters.

“The successful completion of this large contract to supply Mi-171E helicopters is another step towards strengthening successful cooperation between Russia and China,” said Ulan-Ude Aviation Plant Managing Director Leonid Belykh. “Our helicopters have demonstrated their unique capabilities in action in China, and are deservedly in high demand in this fast-growing and high-potential market.”

The new helicopters are equipped to produce exceptional performance in mountainous terrain, including VK-2500 engines delivering increased power, a Safir auxiliary power plant and updated gearbox. Additional internal fuel tanks, a searchlight and landing seats significantly expand the helicopters’ operational options.

Chinese crews have successfully completed training at the Ulan-Ude Aviation Plant’s training centre, where they learned techniques and rules for piloting the helicopters in various conditions using advanced training methods on the latest Mi-171 flight simulator. The pilots praised the comfort and ease of use of the simulator, its consistency with a real helicopter and the high level of competence of the training centre staff.

Mi-171E operates successfully across China, in particular in areas with challenging terrains and harsh climates. They are used to carry cargo including medical supplies, humanitarian aid and construction materials. Russian Helicopters and Ulan-Ude Aviation Plant have received numerous appreciative reviews of the helicopters’ ultra-reliability when dealing with emergency situations.

China is one of the biggest operators of Russian-made helicopters, and has a fleet of about 160 Mi-171s. Russian Helicopters is currently developing the latest model in this renowned series, the Mi-171A2, and Ulan-Ude Aviation Plant is making preparations to put the model into serial production.

Russian Helicopters will showcase the Mi-171A2 and other new developments to potential customers from around the world at the Farnborough International Airshow currently underway at the town of the same name near London.

Russian Helicopters to deliver 2 Mi-171 helicopters to China

Tuesday September 22, 2015 (old news really, but seems no one else posted it)

Russian Helicopters (part of State Corporation Rostec) has signed a contract with China General Aviation Service Co. Ltd. The two Mi-171 helicopters will be delivered in 2016.

Mi-171 helicopters are operated successfully across China, in particular in places with challenging topographies and harsh climates. They are used in a variety of cargo transport operations – delivering medicines, humanitarian aid, construction materials, as well as in search and rescue and emergency response operations.

Mi-171 helicopters were used in operations to rescue people following the severe April 2013 earthquake in Sichuan province. Mountain roads had been completely destroyed – and helicopters were the only way of delivering goods. Russian helicopters were highly rated by Chinese search and rescue teams and helicopter operators for their reliability, resilience and ease of use.

China is a major operator of Russian-made helicopters, with Mi-8/17 models being the most popular. China has a fleet of around 150 Mi-171 helicopters. In June 2014, Russian Helicopters concluded the delivery of 52 Mi-171E helicopters to the Chinese company Poly Technologies. Mi-171E helicopters are equipped with VK-2500 engines.
