UPDATE:

Henri K. believes that this interception is similar to that of July 23, 2014, which occurred at high altitude but within the atmosphere. He believes that the interceptor was the

, which is the Chinese equivalent of the THAAD that was first tested in 2003, and that the target missile was the DF-16.
Notice the US did their own ABM hours later, so it pretty much confirms that's an ABM intercept by PLA given how the US saw the need to respond which is a little scary if you ask me seeing how decisions by superpowers are made like kids playing games.
Of course, not only talking about the US. It's possible China knew of US test beforehand and pre-empted them. :)

I don't think these types of developmental tests can be conducted without some preparation. I'm sure both tests though were about sending a message. It's just coincidental they happened this close together. There's a bigger picture hear going on and the Pentagon has been pushing for the US to show a sign of strength to the world since Russia entered into the Syrian situation.

It will take more than a few hours to set up and execute and ABM test, especially at this relatively early stage in the development of the technology.

As such, I think the US test was just a co-incidence.

We have 8760 hours in a year & the US test happened like about 4 - 7 hours after China ?
Co-incidence ? Hmmm ..... :)
Anyway, US could have known of the tests much earlier thru Chinese notams or just notifications given out for launch of a BM to avoid false alarms thus giving them more time to prepare the response.
If you check back the last time China did this, I'm quite sure I remember the US followed few hours later too.
Here's my take, since it happened on 11/1 & we all know how PLA likes this date, I'm betting China's was planned earlier & US saw the need to respond.

The version I heard about the story between China and W88 is like this:
In 1998, a personnel of Chinese nuclear industry walked into US consulate in Hong Kong, asking for asylum. What he broght with him was really astonishing to American: a whole technical manual of W88, printed in Chinese.
That stimulated US anxiously tightened internal anti-spy inspection. Chinese (Born in Taiwan) American Lee Wen-ho, a LANL scientist was considered as the target due to some past contact with confirmed suspect in other cases, and his relationship with the chief of China Academy of Engineering Physics, also know as "9th Institute", Hu Si-de. With no evidence was found in 2 year long investigation, Lee confessed unproper using of working computer (actually it's unavoidable to most researchers) and all other 58 accuse was cancelled.
The real leaker is still unfound.

You know that's one of those cases where the story keeps changing as it passes from person to person. The version I read and saw in interviews of US officials was a mysterious Chinese man walked into the US embassy in Beijing and slapped down a pencil drawing of the W88 and left. That's how it was concluded China stole the W88.

Here's a CNN story that's filled with holes.

According to investigators, the CIA first learned of the extent of the Chinese espionage in 1995 when a Chinese national approached the agency and turned over a secret Chinese government document.

The CIA later determined that the person who turned over the document worked for Chinese intelligence.

"There are a number of reasons that intelligence services direct information this way," Cox said. "To advertise in some cases something about their strength that they want you to know; in other cases, to promote disinformation."

Approached the agency? Where? In Langley? They didn't arrest him to question him to then later to determine he was Chinese intelligence? They didn't ask him because it's normal for anyone to walk into Langley and give documents on top secret material and let them leave?

Bizarre as it sounds, the version I mentioned on how they believe the W88 was stolen is the most likely. It's a case where the US made a conclusion first and tried to find the trail that leads to that conclusion. Just read this recent case and wonder the stupidity from the FBI to push this case that was later thrown out of court.

They pressed charges without consulting any experts especially the people behind the said to be stolen technology. Is it hard to conclude they think China stole the W88 because someone left a pencil drawing of it at the US embassy in Beijing?

I've mentioned before how conservative radio talk show host Michael Savage interviewed the father of the neutron bomb, Samuel Cohen, on the Chinese stealing US nuclear weapons designs. Savage didn't expect to hear the bombshell from Cohen that Reagan let Chinese nuclear scientists in US national labs to specifically learn about how to make nuclear weapons because since China was an ally of the US against the Soviet Union, experts believe Chinese nukes weren't reliable. So Reagan let Chinese scientists in to learn to make Chinese nukes reliable. You're not going to hear that story much because of the political ramifications in today's extreme rabid political climate.

These stories always change depending on the current political climate and needs of a country. But it's not just the U.S though, every country is the same in this regard.

One day a country is your enemy, the next day it's your friend. History and truth be damned. It's pretty funny to see incidents and stories can be interpreted into the opposite meaning depending on the time period.
