I'm still confused about that -- all I'm getting is that he escaped his confinement, whatever that was, and apparently that's embarrassed the authorities?
I never understood how this saga was meant to be a major embarrassment or present a diplomatic crisis between sino-US relationships at all, and seems more of a story whose fires were lit by the media? I may have missed it, but did the chinese government make many statement regarding this guy at all? I remember when that liu guy got his nobel peace prize a few years back the government whinged and make itself look like a fool, this time around I recall nothing of that sort and seemed like a mountain from a molehill on the part of mostly western media.

It's only an embarassment for China to those that thought China was going to make a big deal about him. They have to salvage something from nothing. Chen is quite obviously a joke that embarrassed the US with his wishy-washy stunt. Really if we are to believe Chen's account then what's being hidden and the media is diverting attention from is US government officials lie and manipulate which what Chen said tricked him into leaving the embassy. But we know Chen was simply being a diva. Probably too many people told him how important he was and it got to his head. Who ever heard of a "hero" that ran away from a fight? He can't do anything half way around the world so all he'll turn out to be is a puppet. He can always make a fool out himself like Harry Wu did. Harry Wu use to be the go to guy for the mainstream media to bash China. But ever since he was caught lying fabricating a fake organ smuggling deal, the only people that give him attention are wacko extremists.

The only authority that got embarrassed the crap out of by Chen is the US. Having thought a victory was secured, Chen then made a scene and accused the US for tricking him out of the embassy, thereby almost creating a diplomatic disaster for the US. Just imagine, the US negotiators red with embarrassment are forced to go back to the negotiating table for more demands, while their Chinese counterparts stared with disapproval. This makes me smile with glee.
Overall, it is a victory for China for getting rid of someone it doesn't want. Chen is useless now, and in a few more weeks this news would be forgotten.

I turned on to CNN in the middle of an interview with Chen by Anderson Cooper. I'll have to watch a repeat to see the whole interview. They had a picture-in-picture of a TV set in China airing the interviewing on CNN International to see if it goes black and of course it didn't. I love this part of the interview... Chen wonders if they will let him back into China. LOL! They let him leave with such ease and now is he going to transfer the drama to get out he had planned now to get back in? Chen said he wandered in the woods for 20 hours hurting his foot by falling in the process. Another lie exposed when the media said he hurt it climbing over a wall. What happened to the manhunt for him during his escape? And then he said he called his friend to go find him after 20 hours of wandering in the woods. How did he do that? Remember he's BLIND! Did he have a cell phone to call his friend when he said in the interview none of his friends could speak to him while under house arrest let alone how would he know where he is for his friend to know where to look for him?
Just finished watching the whole aired interviewed. I didn't miss much. So again no one asks how did he escape and wander the countryside for 20 hrs by himself? I love how CNN says everytime they show a story on Chen, the Chinese government cuts the international feed into China. Seems like Anderson Cooper was upset that it somehow didn't happen this time.
