so apparently, this is a congressional research on PLAN modernization by Ronald O'Rourke.

Now, what's so scary about it is apparent once you do search for the keyword blogspot in there. You would see how many times he quoted my blog in this report. It makes you ponder what the rest of American intelligence agency use as their source.

The author of the report might have reached similar conclusions that you did on your blog, but gave you credit to lend his report credibility and to avoid potential copyright issues. Although there are things you could know (especially from Chinese websites) that he does not know, it is worth noting that his report contains information freely available online, and is just what the U.S. navy wants the public to know about its knowledge of Chinese navy, so there could still be classified material that the U.S. navy does not want to share. Either way, his trust in your reports places you as an expert in Chinese naval development, so congratulations!

Well when you do some reading about the US intelligence community you find that quite a bit of what they do is compiling reports and stuff on the politics, economies and militaries of foreign nations-and they get a huge amount of that stuff from public source material. It was like that in the Cold War, and it has only gotten worse as the years go on. Basically they just scoop stuff up of the Internet and from stuff other people have already written it (like you) and then present it to the people who actually make decisions.

Just the other day I read a piece on how to use public source State Department documents to identify CIA agents. Very interesting, and surprisingly easy too.

Anyway congrats Tphuang:D. SDF's repuation goes up a notch too!

They quote Richard Fisher on practically every page, and he comes here too.

I just got an idea. Tphuang should write a blog about how China is using trained killer whales as suicide bombers or something ridiculous like that and then the next report they have will say "Some sources indicate that there are unconfirmed reports of the PLAN undertaking a secret killer-whale based weapon system program".

Congratulations Feng!:D You are now an officially-recognized OSINT source fit for reference by the legislators of the most powerful country on earth. Thrilling and chilling, eh?

Finn: I'm sure with all the heat that the PRC has taken lately, it doesn't need PETA on its case, too.;)

Congratulations! You have just been footnoted.:)

If forums and blogs like these can influence decision makers, should we be more careful (as in more responsible) of the stuff we post?

If I remember correctly, pics of the 737 with satcom on Hui Tong's site nearly started a congressional investigation on Boeing.
