I read a novel by Nevil Shute called 'An Old Captivity', first published in 1940, in which a pilot takes an archeologist and his daughter from Southampton to Greenland to make a photographic reconnaissance of an area where the archeologist suspects remains of Celtic predecessors of the Norsemen. The aircraft is too small to also take the assistant, who should do most of the photographic work and help maintain the engine, so he goes by ship from Copenhagen and is to remain the winter to take the next ship back. He breaks a leg during a storm so the pilot has to do everything except for the help given by the daughter. He maintains himself with the help of benzedrine(?) until he is exhausted and gets dreams playing nine hundred years earlier. The local doctor says the pills are very bad and he shouldn't use them. So that is a condemnation of a pep pill some eighty years ago.

by 1937 they had really started looking into the effects of Benzedrine ( a amphetamine) but it's seen and used from time to time and it's use is laced across pop culture.even into the modern era.
A few notables are REM, The Red Hot chilli peppers, Elton John, I think Even the Novels Of Ian Fleming have Bond occasionally skipping the Vodka Martini for a Hit of Benzedrine.
It was not until the 1970's that Controls were placed on some drugs particularly for Benzidrine the UN Convention on Psychotropic Substances of 1971 And the US Comprehensive Drug Abuse Prevention and Control Act of 1970 along with later amendments. Then Bennies fell out of Legal favor.

In regards to military use, Pep pills are typically legal types most of the time the same things you can get at a GNC or with a Prescription atleast that's my understanding of the US DOD official line.
Beyond that has been accused from time to time with no solid evidence beyond individual use.
Around the World it's a mixed bag Accusations of Doping for some, Undeniable cases of others. as time has gone by though the culture has changed and where in the early 20th century products were more available and more openly accepted like Cocaine, Benzedrine and the like as time has gone by Culture as changed and knowledge of the risks of such products have altered. Yet the needs to push the boundaries of Human endurance and performance mean some will always be looking to find some edge the question is at what price.

Thank you. My favourite drugs are coffee and tea. I stopped smoking, cigars and pipe, some twenty years ago and I drink alcohol not every year.
Another related matter: I read in US papers that a large and every year growing number of people die from the use of opioids, mostly by abusing prescription drugs. Why is that?

I think those people have psychological need to use the medication for reasons other than pain relief. and I would not be surprised if they had addictions to other substances as well.

A few yrs ago, I was on a fairly high dosage of morphine for over a year and I decided to take myself off it without telling the doctors. Going cold Turkey was not a pleasant experience. I had read up on how long it would take to get over the worst of it which was a week and I counted the days and there were times when I came close to giving in.

Do you enjoy GOOD COFFEE like $10-50 a cup stuff?

Hello Jura,
I cannot comment too much since I’m not living the Venezuelan experience and this is a no discussion thread. However for what I hear in the news the situation is dire. Like most socialist governments, Venezuela has enacted price controls on basic commodities and foods so that they can be affordable to the “people”. Unfortunately if bread is mandated to be sold at no higher than $1.00 and it costs $1.25 to make then a couple of things are going to happen.
a) Bread will utilize cheaper and inferior ingredients (they have enacted laws against this).
b) Loaf of bread will get smaller (they have enacted laws against this).
c) Companies will stop making bread.
What has essentially happened is that companies have stopped making bread and the basic necessities are in short supply. This has in turn created a black market to supply people with the basic necessities, but at a higher price than the free market.
