Brazil is negotiating access to software for its nuclear submarine with France
I know it is almost mendatory nowadays if you want to win contracts, but I feel sometimes that France (and others) transfer too much sensitive/sovereign technology without looking "at the big picture". They want to make a "quick buck" without thinking about the long run...

Why should small countries like France and the UK have nuclear submarines and even SLBM's and not a larger country like Brazil? Brazil is also much less belligerent than France and UK.

    I didn't say Brazil shouldn't...

I am just saying France (and others) should be more careful about giving away sovereign technology for a few $$$.

Just my personnal opinion. But if Brazil has the money to buy something they don't own yet, so be it.

France is financially between Italy and Germany. Possibly the French refused to sell the source code earlier and they now see themselves forced to change their mind.

in my opinion, Brazil and Argentina have the technology to develop a nuclea submarine, they do not need France to do it, but their submarines will be not very advanced and more experimental than operational, So what Brazil wants is just speed up the process to get a modern submarine quicker, in my opinion France knows that, so i order to make a buck, they will make money not from technology Brazil or Argentina can not develop, but from speeding up the process, so for France is rather better sell the technology, plus Brazil already is a French ally
Argentina like Brazil can develop the nuclear reactor to power the submarine
see this is the carem nuclear reactor from Argentina built and designed 100% in Argentina

"In the long run", let's say in the foreseeable future, Brazil won't have any conflict of interests with France, not in military aspect; and the software of nuclear sub ain't exactly good for "nuclear expansion" if it is terrorist and / or rogue state we are concerning, they generally don't have the "know how" and don't have access to nuke materials; it is buyers market these days, Brazil being good enough to be "profilized" as one of BRICS country, would inevitably developed its own nuclear industry that able to support its own full fledged nuclear sub program, so sell the goods when it still have value.

I am in agreeing with Mig29 this time, the deal fastens Brazil's already-set-ambitions of nuclear powerhouse, but would like to point out that, without shitty efforts(no offence), one being able to develop nuclear reactor and one being able to fit everything including nuclear reactor into a tiny (compare to a power plant) submarine, are almost two different things, this "fasten" is a LONG WAY we are talking about.

i do not know how advanced is south America in nuclear tecnology but for whast i have read both Brazil and Argentina have domestic nuclear reactors, the Brazilian one is the Labgene, and by 2014 they will have their own 100% brazilian designed nuclear reactor operational and the base for their nuclear reactor for their submarine.

Argentina will use the Carem 25 for their nuclear Submarine
