The other factor is Taiwan. With the presidential election coming up next year with KMT facing a complete wipe out and DPP a guarantee win, there is a high possibility it could provoke a conflict and escalate into a full blown war.

Whatever other parties might think any policy by Taiwan other than cooperation with China is suicide. IF DPP were to act irresponsibly it will be enough for China to declare its ports and airports on the island closed. Then any ships and aircraft using them will not be insured. Very few ship or aircraft owners will take the risk and the economy of the island will be strangled.
That, after all, is the meaning of the One China policy of most countries in the World.

First of all, how is China going to declare ports and airports on Taiwan be close when it doesn't have control over it???

Secondly, its not about the economic damage it can incur on Taiwan, that is probably already being part of the DPP-US-Japan calculus. If they (US-Japan) really wants to press that button, they are are already prepared for the consequences and its eventuality. The sad part is that Taiwan will most likely be sandwich in the middle, the sacrificial lamb.

Like I said before, the reality is that for the US and Japan, China right now is a emergent threat that can be deal with, instead of an existential threat that has to live with in the future.

As the legal authority over the whole of China it has the right to declare those ports and airports closed. This is what Washington should have done in 1861 with the ports of the Confederacy. Unfortunately it declared a blockage which is only valid if enforced and was tantamount to recognizing the Confederacy as an independent state. It might be that the DPP politicians can be bribed to forget about the interests of their voters, such things happen. :) But a ship owner who knows that all his ships will be arrested that enter a Chinese port, and perhaps when they enter a port in one of the SCO or BRICS countries, if one of his ships entered a Taiwanese port after it was closed will need very little time to reach the right decision. So it will be very difficult to start a war based on anything DPP might do.

I have a question about type 056 light frigate.
Which engine do they use? Is it produced in China or imported?
I've read conflicting reports about this.

Is there any company in China currently operating semi-submersible ship like the 868 (the new commissioned, MLP-like, ship that was shown carrying a Zubr recently)?
