Apartheid South African had 6 nukes ?

one of my colleagues is from south Africa who moved to NZ just before the election in 1990's ... he claims he worked for high tech company in south Africa ... built missile, satellites, etc ... he said to me yesterday that Apartheid SA had 6 nukes .. he saw them himself, but they had dismantled them before Nelson Mandela came into power

It was a shock to me , I never knew SA ever had any nuke ... do you guys think it is the truth or he just talked bulll***sh***

Yes, it is true. This has been "public knowledge" for years now. Use google.

It's true. They used many of the same techniques and people that AQ Khan used to get nuclear supplies to Pakistan. But they decided it was better to destroy the nukes than let the "inferior African rabble" have them.

Yes indeed, Nukes are indiscriminate weapons and nothing that failed to discriminate had any place in the old South Africa, so they had to go!

The reason why there are people that know and people who are surprised by the news is because it's a little story that people don't want being discussed. We went through this with the debate over Vietnam getting nuclear technology. All the reasons why they said it was wrong for China to pass along nuclear technology to questionable regimes can be said here. Is anyone going to dare to argue that apartheid South Africa was a responsible regime. And who helped apartheid South Africa get nukes? Israel and Taiwan was said to be involved. And where did they get assistance? Parallels what China is accused of.

Not sure on this. Nukes are as difficult to do away as they are to acquire.

Some ' arrangement" could have been made to stash them safely for a later day.

The acknowledged nuclear weapons states are the USA, Russia, China, France, UK, India, Pakistan, North Korea.

It's an open secret that Israel has many nuclear weapons. As stated, South Africa developed weapons and then dismantled them, and Ukraine, Belarus and Kazakhstan all gave up the warheads they inherited from the USSR. Various other states have or did have nuclear weapons programs at one stage or another, without actually building a bomb.

I recall reading newspaper in the early 90's about swedish nuclear weapon,stockpile is small small.

Sweden did went into detailed nuclear weapon research after WWII and had plan to build 100 warhead in the span of 10 years. However these plans are shelved by the 1960s due to budget constraint... and later scrapped in 1968 after Sweden signed the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. ()
