In previous articles we’ve looked at the ability of large eagles – the Golden eagleAquila chrysaetos in particular – to kill surprisingly large prey. As in adult pronghorn, adult reindeer, juvenile red deer and juvenile domestic cattle etc. (see links below, or Cooper (1969), Deblinger & Alldredge (1996) and Nybakk et al. (1999)). Such behaviour isn’t unique to Golden eagles: Bald eagles Haliaeetus leucocephalus and other species can do similar things (McEneaney & Jenkins 1983). Eagles can be trained, of course, meaning that people can get them to do remarkable things that seem contrary to sensible behaviour: they can use them to hunt wolves, for example.

Guys...I love the pics. Great pictures.

But let's dispense with the competition.

They are birds in their natural habitat for Heaven's sake! No need to get all nationalistic, demeaning, or chest thumping about this.

Let's just enjoy both birds for what they are and what they can do.

I removed the one pic that attempted to somehow demean the US and the Bald Eagle...no need for that.

The Golden Eagles in Asia, particularly Mongolia, are birds I have watched several specials on as well.

They train them to hunt wolves! Watch:

To be fair, wolves in Mongolian steppes are smaller than typical Eurasian grey wolves (closer in size to the coyotes). Nonetheless, the feat is impressive considering the vast difference in body mass.
