If you ask me i think Pak would have done best to turn the T-59's into ICV's. The Isrealis did it and it provided great protection plus it was cheaper than buying a new ICV. Using a T-59 isn't wise now, RPG could tickle the tank's ammunition to go off.

icv? do you mean ifv? what does the type 59 have to do with this? if you read the posts, it said the chassis was type 59, not the turret. i would assume the turret is much better protected.

are those plates on the tank composite armor?

You do realize the tendency of Soviet design tanks to blow? The Type-59 has the same tendency exept worse. The T-72 is famous for blowing up and killing the crew. The Type 59 should be no different. The Turret is the problem. Tankers could explain this better than me so I won't try.

One of the big reasons that the T-72 blew up and killed its crew was that the T-72's have the fuel AND ammuntion packed side by side. Since the Al Zarrar is an upgraded Type 59, it would be pretty beleivable to assume that this feature has been taken out.

Armour Slabs !!!!
I thought the turret to be a new one !!!! Its not a very good idea to weld an older turret with extra slabs , it will increase the weight and bring a series of problems !!

Thats why they are also upgrading their engine. 520 hp to 730 hp

here are some examples of armour slabs

A armoured slab might even be lighter than ERA depending on the type of materials inside.

What have been done to protect the Al-Zarrar's rear?
AFAIK, there was no added protection to the rear of the type 59D.
I wonder though. If Pakistan can give this upgrade, why don't China?
From what I see, this upgrade is better than that of the type 59D.
Last, what is the caliber of Al-Zarrar's gun?

It is a 125 mm gun. That is a pretty massive gun and it can take out many MBT's if armed with the proper ammuniton.

A bit of info on armoured slabs they are not new the earliest is example is the soviet aromured slab call by the west as bra armour they can stop rounds fired form the British L-7 tankgun. The most intresting is the Iraqi homemade version its armour steel space with rubber and a layer of Cement a primitive form of composit armour:roll: stupid as it is they actual defelcted some RPG shots:)

Does anyone have a rear view of the Al-Zarrar?
From the look now, it seems that the AZ can KO the 59D.
But can the T-55 chassis take the 125mm gun recoil and weight?

The tank in the 1st picture looks like it has a 105mm gun though.

Well, cement is heat-resistent and impact resistant.
I wouldn't mind replacing steel with concrete on my tank.

The thing was not a dud.
