Aircraft Carriers III

Unfortunately all that doesn't amount to one US super carrier battle group. :(
True but 'something' will always be better than 'nothing', the 'best' is always the enemy of 'good enough', and a pair of jump jet carriers did successfully beat the odds, confound the experts and win in a 'Target Rich Environment' when outnumbered 10 to 1...

Please, can you tell me what you are referring to?

Well, there was no JS Kaga but both Hyuga class flat-tops with JS Izumo. There were no photos of Izumo with Hyuga class destroyers together (even during JMSDF naval review!) and than... BANG! It was worthwhile as they showed some muscles in boring, normal, annual exercise together with US super-carrier and powerful escort creating an unmatched force on the Pacific Ocean. Well played by both US Navy and JMSDF I must admit. Probably planned for a year or so. Quiet but meaningful message. And you know who's recipient ;)

Usually these type exercise are planned out well in advance. They have been held annually for the last 16 years. As pointed out this is quite a powerful force.

Carrier strike groups. I remember back in the 80s there was a strange attitude amongst many defence commentators and authors that anything less than a Nimitz wasn't worthy of the name aircraft carrier, and traces of this thinking persist. The choice for the K in the 70s and 80s was not Nimitz or Invincible, it was Invincible or nothing, so clearly we made the right choice there. Other nations had the same choice, Harrier Carrier or nothing and also made the right choice IMHO. When two Navies meet in combat, the one with organic air support will prevail, so some carrier force will always be better than none.

Very impressive. Four carriers together there:

That's the:

USS Ronald Reagan, CVN-76
JS Hyuga, DDH-181
JS Ise, DDH-182
JS Izumo, DDH-183

...and all of their escorts, including four US Navy AEGIS vessels:

USS Antietam (CG-54)
USS Chancellorsville (CG-62)
USS Benfold (DDG-65)
USS Mustin (DDG-89)

...and numerous JMSDF destroyers, including their own AEGIS destroyers.
