Been there done that. Very bad for morale. The US Navy in my opinion could have sent USS John C Stennis on a short deployment so CVN-72 can be relieved. or the USN could have sped up IKEs (CVN 69) .

Especially so close to the Thanksgiving/Christmas Holiday's, sailors look forward to going home to their families during this time of year, more importantly wives and children of sailors depend on them being home all year..... it has a broad and long lasting "ripple effect" on those families as well.

so the sailor's will catch "blow back" from Momma! and huge disappointment from kids and parents....
 
I've noticed some time ago about

a relatively low cost projection for CVN-79 ("about $11.3 billion" of then-year dollars, in the document linked below),

and a higher one for CVN-80 ("about $12.3 billion" of then-year dollars),

and about the same for CVN-81 ("about $12.5 billion" of then-year dollars);
