That baby smokes like a "barn fire"!
Overstated I think as In general Interceptors tend to trade off Guns for speed and climb. There was still a pervasive attitude in military circles in the sixties that the age of dogfighting was over, Guns were obsolete and the targets were big slow Soviet Bombers.

FANAL 19 photo exercise. FANAL 19 is a French exercise designed to enhance the operational capability of the French Carrier Strike Group, Charles de Gaulle while providing realistic training to both the French and participating nations while strengthening interoperability and relationships.
Yeah that story basically sums up the basic arguments really well.
One other argument I have heard is that basically one of the main reasons why the Navy was so dead set against the F-111 was its large size. Yet the F-14 was not smaller.
I am not surprised the Navy fighter pilots did not like it since the F-111 was basically designed as a long range platform. So agility was a least concern.
Basically as a bomber. Its interceptor capabilities were rather limited.
I did not know it was the Navy who chose it to be a side-by-side seater though. That is particularly weird and like the article said was a cause for substantial issues.
Well not as much the side-by-side seating but the capsule escape mechanism.
The F-14 airframe was much superior but it was also a later design which uses technology which likely was not available at the time.
The F-111 had many crashes in the early program it took them a long time to get the airframe in safe flyable state.
The ship is heeling because of the turn. There is no important sea state, that can generate a heel.So BD, the CDG is heeled over about 10-12 degrees, certainly enough sea to make flight ops entertaining??: you can see a lot of daylight under the port sponson?? so what is the "sea state" in the picture?? 4 or 5 ???
