USS-Iwo-Jima-Transit-Through-the-Strait-of-Messina-1024x685.jpg

Naval Today said:
After paying a scheduled port visit to Civitavecchia, Italy on December 30, USS Iwo Jima (LHD 7), US Navy’s amphibious assault ship, continued it deployment.

The vessel soon took on a southbound transit through the Strait of Messina to carry on with conducting naval operations in the U.S. 6th Fleet area of responsibility in support of U.S. national security interests in Europe.

Iwo Jima is the flagship of the Iwo Jima Amphibious Ready Group (IWO ARG)/24th Marine Expeditionary Unit (24 MEU), which is comprised of embarked Marines from the 24th MEU, amphibious dock landing ship USS Fort McHenry (LSD 43) and amphibious transport dock ship USS New York (LPD 21).

I started my build of the HUGE 1/350 scale USS Iwo Jima, LHD-7, today. It has over 1,5000 parts and I will be adding a lighting system to the Hanger Deck, the Well-deck, and the Island. Have also gotten a few after-market accessories to add to the kit. It will probably take me 3-4 months to build but will be a really neat, and extremely detailed model.

In other LHD news, while the Iwo Jima is in the med doing this, the Makin Island, LHD-8, and its ARG are also in the news on the other side of the globe, in the Pacific:

USS-Makin-Island-Waves-Goodbye-to-Duqm-Oman-1024x694.jpg

Naval Today said:
The amphibious assault ship USS Makin Island (LHD 8), embarked with Amphibious Squadron Five and 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) concluded a seven-day port visit in Duqm, Oman.

The visit provided Sailors and Marines the opportunity to experience the culture and hospitality of Oman after 115 days at sea.
During the port visit, Sailors and Marines participated in various festivities on the pier.

The visit also gave the crew an opportunity to complete many tasks including preservation of the ship’s hull and inport maintenance.
The Makin Island Amphibious Ready Group (ARG) and the embarked 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) are deployed in support of maritime security operations and theater security cooperation efforts in the U.S. 5th Fleet area of operations.

The French Navy issued a statement to announce that the Carrier Strike Group (CSG) left Toulon naval base (Southern France) this morning for a deployment named "Arromanches".
...
For the "Arromanches" deployment, the French CSG is composed of:
» The nuclear powered aircraft carrier (CVN) Charles de Gaulle
» An on-board command staff
» An Embedded Air Group (EAG), comprising 12x Rafale M, 9x Super Etendards Modernisés, 1x E-2C Hawkeye and 4x helicopters
» The Forbin class Air Defense Destroyer (DDG) Chevalier Paul (with 1x NH90 Caïman helicopter)
» The Durance class Replenishment Oiler (AOR) Meuse
» A Rubis class Nuclear Attack Submarine (SSN)
» The Royal Navy Type 23 Duke class Anti-Submarine Frigate HMS Kent (to join the French CSG in the Red Sea.).
...
As in 2014, during its last deployment made in the Indian Ocean, the CSG will have to operate under US operational control to test and enhance the level of interoperability and cooperation between the two navies and thus maintain the ability to jointly conduct high intensity operations.

Interesting that the air wing only includes a single E-2C Hawkye.

You would expect that they would have two in case of some sort of problem or failure. Seems risky to me to be going into combat with only a single AEW aircraft.[/QUOTE]

The picture shows two Hawkeyes.

That picture is not from the exercise. I have had that picture itself on

(3rd pic down) for several years.

It is the description of what they will be embarking during this particular exercise that I was referring to...and that says only one Hawkeye. Which is why I am asking NavyReco about it.

Poll Shows Majority of French People in Favor of Delivering The Two Mistral Class LHDs to Russia
Pig3kNX.jpg

According to a recent poll ordered by French financial newspaper La Tribune and conducted by international marketing firm IFOP, a large majority of French people (64%) are in favor of delivering the two Mistral-class LHDs to Russia.

The poll was conducted between 9 and 12 January among 1001 people. French people appear to be favorable to the delivery considering the economic consequences that would follow a cancellation of the contract. Russia could cancel its contract with France if Paris fails to hand over the first Mistral helicopter carrier until the end of January, a high-ranking source in Russia’s Defense Ministry told TASS on Wednesday.

Australia-Day-Boards-HMAS-Canberra.jpg

Naval Today said:
HMAS Canberra hosted the launch of the Australia Day Council of New South Wales’ 2015 Australia Day Program.

The newly commissioned Landing Helicopter Dock will be the centrepiece of celebrations on Sydney Harbour for Australia Day, positioned between the Opera House and the Harbour Bridge.

Commander Australian Fleet, Rear Admiral Stuart Mayer said the Australian Defence Force would be supporting events across the country in both regional and metropolitan areas.

This Australia Day is the first one celebrated with the newest addition to our fleet and the Navy is honoured to participate alongside the community in this year’s celebrations.

The ship will be pivotal to the ‘Salute to Australia’ that will involve a 21 gun salute by the Army from Bradley’s Head and a fly past by the Air Force.

Navy will also provide helicopter displays and water craft in support of activities around the Harbour.

The Royal Australian Navy provides significant support to Australia Day celebrations each year. Since 1988, the Navy has assisted with the traditional Australia Day Regatta on Sydney Harbour, often providing the flagship when operational commitments allow.

I have to say...HMAS Canberra, LHD-02, is looking good. I posted this article mainly to show this pic of her.
