This ship is an enlarge Burke design and will displaced more than 10,000 tons. It will have a 180 VLS cells.

"Rivalling"? That suggests it's merely the equal of anything in the PLAN. Personally I would say it is superior to anything the PLAN has.

The KDX-III is even more heavily armed than the USN Arleign Burke class DDG. If you had North Korea as a hostile neighbor, you'd probably build very heavily armed ships too, hehe.

I like S. Korean navy's modernization program, they have a good mix of imported and domestic (licensed?) technologies and the new ships pack a big punch. I also like their selection of 30mm Goalkeeper and RAM over the Phalanx system for CIWS duties (unlike the JMSDF).

Can you document the 180 VLS cell capability. To date, I had heard that the KDX-III would have one 80-cell MK-41 launcher, one 48-cell domestic launcher loaded with 32 of South Korea's Hyunmoo IIIC land attack missiles and 16 ASROCs. That's 128 total.

The vessel will also have 16 SSM-700K Hae Sung long range anti-shipping missiles. It will also carry a 21-cell RAM launcher.

Now, if you add up ALL missiles, you get 165 missiles total. But that's still not 180, and only 128 are VLS.

Do not get me wrong. With the AEGIS system, and all that armament (adding the 30mm Goal Keeper and 127mm gun), these vessels are going to be the most powerfully armed destroyers out there. The only real down side is the lack of a helo hangar.

But I would still be interested in seeing if something new has come up and if there is actually 180 VLS cells.

Actually, I read MK41 80 VLS cells as MK4 180 VLS cells. Must be getting old.

Ok...no problem. Just wanted to be sure I hadn't missed anything. Either way, these are going to be the most powerfully armed DDGs in the world IMHO...really more like cruisers.

Though not as heavily armed, the Burkes I would still rate as more effective because of the experience level of the crews, the wealth of instituinal experience and procedures, and because of their numbers, particularly the last half of them with the helo hangars.

Must be getting old.
Hehehe...you and me both.

yeah, I'm pretty sure Jeff is correct here. I think KDX-3 with it's armament might even be better than Atago class, which is pretty good in its own right.

I think the KDX-3's plus side is that amongst other things it carries cruise-missiles, whereas the Atago has a purely defensive configuration. The only thing it lacks is SM-3, which is useful depending on your POV.

Of course the problem the ROKN has is that it will only have three of these ships, whereas Japan will have four Kongos and two Atagos. So the ROKN has to load these ships up as best it can.

Actually I wonder whether they could have got another one if they'd taken off some of the bells & whistles.

I feel very envious that South Korea is getting such fine ships. The Burke derivative competing for the Australian air warfare destroyer order is nicknamed the "Baby Burke" so I can see why these ships are described as "Super Burkes" ! ;)

Cheers
