Does anyone know how much the warship deal was worth? I would imagine it would have to be equal to or below $9 billion. I guess you can tell if this were true if the fines cancel out any profits from the deal for France.

Putin was not the first to remark on this. I also saw a remark that the US are prepared to ruin Europe to support Kiev, which clearly doesn't make sense ( where? about a week ago ). The will to cooperate with Washington in the Ukraine case can only diminish by such tactics.

I just heard in the news on my non-favorite Dutch radio station that the newly installed "defense minister" in Kiev announced that the Ukrainian army will occupy the Crimea and have a victory parade in Sevastopol. Germany and France will not be amused.

I think it is pretty obvious to all that the combined power of the Ukrainian State Military Machine is actually being slowly defeated by local militias and Russian volunteers in the East, even though it has on paper the overwhelming firepower in the conflict.

I do not think it an exaggeration to say, that should the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation ever become fully engaged in the conflict, they would be rolling into Kiev within 48 hours.

irresponsible and idiotic comments like these could get you 'regime changed'. Ukraine is doomed if they have a bunch of leaders like this defense minister. pray for the Ukrainian people!

Yes, God forbid someone talks about liberating annexed territory. I mean, how can Russia go about expanding its borders if people don't accept illegal annexation!

As a private citizen, he can say whatever his heart desires. However, he's speaking publicly as the current Ukrainian Defense minster, someone in his capacity should know that his words can be construed as an overt threat of military actions against a powerful country that is just one excuse away from launching an intervention.

Any sane and rational defense minister in that position wouldn't have said that at least not publicly for reporters to hear.

The rebels have abandoned Sloviansk. The Ukrainian flag is flying again in the city.

Pro-Russian separatists in Ukraine have evacuated the city of Sloviansk, a crucial eastern stronghold, amid a large-scale offensive by the military.

Separatists said the "overwhelming numerical superiority" of the army had forced them to relocate to Kramatorsk.

Troops have hoisted the Ukrainian flag over Sloviansk's council building, and officials said soldiers were mopping up the last outposts of rebel resistance.

Two smaller towns are also reported to have been retaken by government troops.
