Syrian rebel groups congratulate Netanyahu on his election victory

ShowImage.png

Various Syrian rebel group leaders have sent congratulatory messages to newly re-elected Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, according to an Israeli Druse who has acted as a go-between with Israel.

“We extend to you and the great leadership of the Israeli people our warmest congratulations and blessings in the democratic wedding witnessed by the State of Israel,” wrote one opposition political activist, Musa Al-Nabhan, in a letter sent to Mendi Safadi and shared with The Jerusalem Post.

Specifically, Nabhan addressed his congratulations to Netanyahu as well as newly elected Druse Likud MK Ayoub Kara, adding, “We hope that your government will continue to provide the necessary support to the Syrian people, which are fond of you and looking to build the best of relations on all levels.”

Nabhan also thanked Kara and Safadi for their efforts.

Safadi served as former deputy minister Ayoub Kara’s chief of staff and has independently met with members of the liberal and democratic Syrian opposition who oppose the Islamists and want friendly relations with Israel.

Safadi also met with Syrian rebel leaders last week and has previously met with them in Europe and has traveled in the region, met with activists, and relayed messages from them to the Prime Minister’s Office.

He was responsible for relaying the congratulatory letters from the Syrian opposition to then President-elect Reuven Rivlin.

Safadi told the Post that he had received two official letters and numerous other calls, including from officers in the western-backed Free Syrian Army.

Another letter from The Revolutionary Assembly for the Future of Syria, addressed Netanyahu, saying, “We received with great hope and joy the news of your victory...and hope that you will continue, along with advisor Mr. Mendi Safadi, to support the Syrian revolution.”

Safadi said that the rebels thanked Israel for its humanitarian support.

"If the West implemented a strategy with the Free Syrian Army in all parts of Syria similar to that which was implemented in aid and military support to the Kurds in Kobani, Islamic State and al-Qaida’s Nusra Front would be swiftly removed from the battlefield,” argued Safadi.

Regarding reports that Israel has treated Nusra Front fighters in its hospitals, Safadi says that these rumors originated from sources close to the Syrian regime, which is trying to defame Israel by linking it to the jihadists.

“Israel unequivocally does not come under any contact of any kind with the Nusra Front or any other Islamist group since it is clear to everyone that these are a source of danger for the security of the state,” he added.

On Saturday morning, the Syrian Arab Army’s Special Forces brigade “Al-Qawat Suqour Al-Sahra” (Desert Hawks) captured an 11 year old male Islamic State of Iraq and Al-Sham (ISIS) fighter at Well 105 in Jabal Al-Sha’ar (Poet Mountains).

According to a military source, the 11 year old boy was found hiding inside
an abandoned warehouse before he was apprehended by the Desert Hawks.

The child was instructed to provide the soldiers information regarding the ISIS
fighters whereabouts and his documentation – he joined ISIS along with his father, who was killed during the battle.

Due to the nature of this matter, the child’s information has been withheld;
however, a source confirmed that he was transferred to social services in the Homs Governorate.

Syria claims shooting down of US drone over Latakia

bbc-blocks-dark.png

The Syrian military says it has shot down a US drone near the city of Latakia, a stronghold of President Bashar al-Assad in north-west Syria.

US officials have said they lost contact with a drone but that it is unclear if it was shot down.
If confirmed it would be the first time Syrian forces have attacked a US aircraft since the start of coalition strikes against Islamic State
(IS).

Syria has not been participating in the raids on IS.
The country's state-run Sana news agency described the unmanned surveillance plane as "hostile", without giving further details. The Pentagon said it was looking into the incident.

Report: 'Star Wars' Tunisia Town Becomes Flashpoint in ISIS Fight

A town that was once at the center of a conflict in a galaxy far, far away has become a notable locale in a far more serious real-world struggle.

The area around Tataouine, a town in Tunisia that doubled as the desert planet Tatooine in the original Star Wars, has become a way station for jihadists attempting to cross the Libyan border just 60 miles away,

.

CNN says that not only have two arms caches been found in the area this month — including more than 20,000 rounds of ammunition as well as rocket-propelled grenade launchers — but three men were arrested in the town ahead of an attempt to cross the border into Libya with the intent to join a terrorist network.

A Tunisian national guard officer quoted in the CNN piece notes that, as the threat of ISIS grows, Tunisians feel concerned about their security, leading to the creation of a 12-mile buffer zone along the border between the countries, in addition to a ban on men between the ages of 18 and 35 being allowed to travel into Libya without residence papers and proof of employment.

Concerns about the area’s safety are such that the British Foreign Office has

Iraq reverses decision on Tikrit air support
Jeremy Binnie, London - IHS Jane's Defence Weekly

The Iraqi government has reversed its decision to sideline the United States from the offensive to recapture the city of Tikrit from the Islamic State: a move that has prompted the withdrawal of the Shia militias that were spearheading the operation.

The US-led Combined Joint Task Force - Operation 'Inherent Resolve' (CJTF-OIR) announced the decision on 25 March, when it said it had commenced "operations to support Iraqi security forces in Tikrit" at the request of Iraqi prime minister Haider al-Abadi.

"The coalition is now providing direct support to Iraqi security forces conducting operations to expel [the Islamic State] from the city. CJTF-OIR is providing air strikes, airborne intelligence capabilities, and advise-and-assist support to Iraqi security force headquarters elements," it said.

US officials revealed at the outset of the offensive in early March that the Iraqi government had not requested the coalition's support and that Iranian-backed Shia militias made up around two thirds of the forces involved.

General Lloyd Austin, the commander of US Central Command, told the US Senate Armed Services Committee on 26 March that the Iraqi government had requested US support after the Iranian-backed effort to recapture Tikrit stalled.

"These forces were not being controlled by the government of Iraq, they did not have a coherent scheme of manoeuvre or command and control, they did not have precision fires to support this effort, so trying to go about the difficult task of clearing a place like Tikrit without that caused them to stall," he said.

Gen Austin said the US insisted that the Shia militias be withdrawn before it provided support. "We had to know who exactly was on the ground, we had to be able to deconflict our fires," he said. As a result of the militias' withdrawal, around 4,000 members of the Iraqi special forces and federal police were left to clear the city, he added.

He said that the Iraqi security forces had not only planned but rehearsed a "credible scheme of manoeuvre" to clear Tikrit.

Shia militia commanders had previously insisted that they did not need US support. "Some of the weaklings in the army ... say we need the Americans, while we say we do not need the Americans," Hadi al-Amiri, the commander of the Badr Organisation's paramilitary wing, told journalists on 22 March.
