18 years ago (I'm actually 23 hrs late) the passenger ferry Estonia sank en route from Tallin to Stockholm South from the Finnish isle of Utö. The ship was the largest ferry in the merchant fleet of the newly independent Estonian Republic and a subject of national prestige. The accident was the deadliest peacetime disaster in the Baltic with its death toll of 852.
It was also the worst maritime accident ever at Finnish waters. I was only born nearly two years later, but this disaster really touches me.
I devote this thread to the remembrance to those who were killed and to discussion regarding the accident.
