039 and 54 going into high production

Someone posted this on one of the Chinese boards, apparently, it's from Kanwa:

So that's the 054 Ma'anshan FFG and the 039 Song SS?

I understand the 054 since it is relatively new...but am surprised if the Song is going to high production since it is relatively older than the newer Yuan. The Song was first delivered in what? 1994?

54A is likely the one produced, an upgrade from the original Maashan.

39A is the one produced for Song, again better than the prototype 039. I think Song came out in 2003, a year before Yuan. Its capability is said to be less than Kilo. I think this one is being marketed for export, so that's why so many are produced. Yuan probably hasn't finished all the testing yet.

i heard the new 54's are going to have the shtill air defence missle instead of the thales. is that Trure? the chinese already have severla songs building right now.

Thanks...that makes since on both counts.

Songs for export? To be honest I haven't read anything indication Chinese tenders to foreign sub needs. Remember how people thought the 39 was for export back in the late 80s and it turned out they weren't? There was a massive order of Songs being completed in the last 2 years, somewhere in the neighborhood of 7, in fact. And that's only in 2 shipyards, namely Jiang Nan in Shanghai and Dalian. (I don't think WuHan produced any songs)

To best of my knowlege the PRC has only exported some Romeo-class submarines to North Korea and Egypt. The 4 Chinese-built Romeo class submarines in Egypitan service have been refit to use US-made weapons.

I'm not aware of any Song exports, but in today's market the PRC would face very tough competition from Russian Kilo submarines.

On the plus side, US, France, and UK now use all nuclear-powered submarines, and they're not likely to export them, new or used. So when France retire some of its older nuclear powered attack subs it's unlikely that they'd be on the market for cost-conscious buyers.
