In addition to what Deino posted in some other threads asking about a new carrier at Dalian, the rumor mill is suggesting that work is indeed underway on a new carrier, and it should become visible later this year.

Going into any further detail would not be sensible at this point in time. There are still too many unkowns. I recommend starting a dedicated thread for CV 004, if it proves to be a wholly different design from 003. Word remains that it is nuclear.

Thanks for this post .... any idea, if this carrier will also be built via premanufactured modules or in a traditionell way as the 002/001 A carrier?

According to our feline friend (FZGFZY), Dalian Shipyard will build (or has started building) the first Chinese CVN and that it will appear in five years' time.

(借美帝图,也没几年了)。如同本猫13年确定02大连,15年确定03江南一样(均己验证)。本猫确定中国第一条CVN核动力航空母舰五年左右,将出现在大连造船厂。白纸黑字等时间验证,

FZGFZY previously stated that Dalian Shipyard will undergo facility upgrades/modifications in preparation of the new carrier build.

Building a nuclear powered aircraft carrier already? Seems a bit risky but it does have the potential to speed up the carrier program.

If it was me, I would probably put Jiangnan in charge of a carrier with gas turbine propulsion with EMALS and Dalian in charge of a carrier with nuclear propulsion with conventional steam catapults.

If it appears in 5 years time, they probably have not started work on it.

And why on earth would it make sense to develop a carrier with EM cat and a carrier with steam catapults? They've already committed to EM cats for the JN carrier (003 ex-002) -- why would they bother with steam on a presumably more advanced carrier with nuclear propulsion?

Can we please rename this thread to something else?

I.e. without "001A". Pak def forum has done it right, where the threads are called 002 (ex 001A) and 00X/003 (ex 002) so everyone knows what they were once called and what they are now called. Unfortunately due to various reasons on SDF we still retain the "001A" and "002" designations for the carrier at DL and JN respectively which just confuses the heck out of everyone.

For this new thread, how about we rename it to something more generic like "00X carrier/nuclear carrier"?

I must admit I would have changed the names of the carrier threads already but following my last action to do this Jeff quite directly demanded to NOT interfere in this section, which he feels as his territory. :(

Pay attention to the second part of the post (yes I know, I should've modified my post):

"FZGFZY previously stated that Dalian Shipyard will undergo facility upgrades/modifications in preparation of the new carrier build."

Dalian hasn't started on the construction yet.

Even this particular thread? With only 18 posts?

I don't mind keeping 001A and 002 threads with their names as it is so far, but if we're starting a whole new thread can we make it so that we don't reference the names "001A" and "002" and make it something more generic?

In the whole PLAN section! ... could you agree with the changed title?

How about just "00X future carrier/nuclear carrier" -- i.e.: no reference to 004 or Dalian specifically.

That we it can refer to just future carriers or nuclear carriers in general, rather than a specific hull or a specific ship being built at Dalian.
Instead, it can cover all future carriers or nuclear carriers built at all shipyards (i.e.: not just Dalian but also Jiangnan in the long term).

That said, it's only my belief. I personally think being specific has its benefits, but sometimes being generic is better when appropriate.
