Re: US Military Pictures thread

A photo essay from the New York Times....Sorry NO HI-RES!

Quote:
Since the start of the war in Afghanistan in 2001, the northern part of the border with Pakistan has been a particular focus of concern for American forces. The borderline there is essentially a legal fiction, an imaginary line that separates people with the same ethnicity and history, drawn across hundreds of miles of terrain so rugged it is impossible to fence off or even fully patrol. In the photos above a number of United States soldiers from the Sixth Squadron, Fourth Cavalry, left Combat Outpost Lowell near Kamu to replace soldiers at a hillside "overwatch" position.

They most often fire in support of Army infantry units fighting Taliban insurgents in the nearby Korengal Valley, the site of some of the heaviest fighting in Afghanistan.

Re: US Military Pictures thread

You know I've been pocking PLA of it's poor earprotection that it issues to it's artillerymens but apparently the situation isen't much better in the US Army either. I noticed that they have small earblugs but from personal expereince I can assure you that it's hardly sufficient. You can withness this yourself...note how everyone covers their ears when firing? Poor lads...

On positive note I couldn't leave noticing the curved loading club which is used to ram the shell into the tube. In high angle position which howitsers are often fired it's actually very practical as you can ram the almoust 50 kg shell into near vertical direction from ergonomical position.
