But surely some anti-glare treatment on the scope would be able to do the same job and not vender the front rail useless?

That may be a way of solving the glint problem. The other more obvious reason is that a bigger scope will also make for better clearity for the same magnification, which is a plus for longer range target.

Aye, but if you look at this picture.

That combined makes me pretty confident that we are looking at a detachable screw-on attachment that does not have any optics in it.

Taking the mounting of the scope as the middle of a normally proportioned scope, it's still considered a large scope. The pipe extension without the lens in this case is about 5 inches long. For some reason they've decided to use a hood extension for the scope probably in combination with a more sparing chemical treatment of the lens. Too much of antiglare lens treatment could end up filtering out too much light.

This arrangement means that only light that is more parallel to the target reaches the lenses, without filtering out the really important lights. Only lights that reflect directly off the target towards the scope is useful.

That's basically the function of a scope's hood although the light won't come in parallel but in a very long cone. Otherwise the field of view, about 2 inches, will be just too narrow.

My point was chemical treatment of lens to reduce lens glare (to a certain angle) is not the only solution (the other being the hood) and that the chemical treatment may end up filtering out too much light.
