Boeing Announces Successful Test of Electronics Destroying Champ Missile
    Shane McGlaun (Blog) - October 24, 2012 9:56 AM

Missile uses microwaves to destroy electronics

Boeing has announced the first ever test of a new missile system known as Champ. Champ stands for Counter-electronics High-powered Advanced Missile Project. The goal of the project is to create a missile that can defeat any electronic target with little or no collateral damage.

The missile test was conducted on October 16 at 10:32 AM at the Utah Test and Training Range. The Champ missile was launched, and as it approached its first target, it fired a burst of High Power Microwaves into a two-story building built on the test range. Inside the building were rows of personal computers and electrical systems that were turned on to help gauge the effects that the missile would have on the electronic equipment.

According to Boeing, seconds after the missile passed over its target the PC monitors went dark as Champ knocked out computer and electrical systems in the target building.

“This technology marks a new era in modern-day warfare,” said Keith Coleman, CHAMP program manager for Boeing Phantom Works. “In the near future, this technology may be used to render an enemy’s electronic and data systems useless even before the first troops or aircraft arrive,”

Boeing says that the television cameras that were set up to monitor the experiment were knocked off-line by Champ as well. The missile hit seven targets during the one-hour test that proved it was able to degrade and defeat electronics inside test buildings. The team working on the project is currently studying the data collected during the test.

“We know this has some capabilities and some impact, we’re really trying to engage the customer to see if there is a way we can actually get this fielded and implemented sooner than later,” Dodd said.

“Today we turned science fiction into science fact,” Coleman said.

The Champ missile had its first test in 2011.

curious about why the camera didn't get taken down (emp hardened?). Also :41 of the video made me laugh.

I can imagine in the future someone will put this into a satellite or a scram jet platform and make it even more lethal.

I can imagine someone launching such a missile from an ordinary shipping container. That would mean all shipping containers destined to the US or merely passing the US would have to be inspected either in the port of departure or at sea when coming within say 1000 miles from the US coast. This would mean trade with the US will become more expensive which would be bad for the US economy.

Don't think any terrorist groups are going to have access to this sort of technology for a while now. Also this concern would probably apply to other countries before us, as we have been the first to demonstrate the capability.

But the US is attracting the attention of terrorists all over the world by trying to murder them using drones, and by killing many non-terrorists acting as recruiting sergeant for the terrorists. They know they do it so they are probably even more afraid than warranted by the efforts of the terrorists.

Did you say "trying to murder them"? Seems like the terrorists operating under the black flag of jihad were the first to draw blood.

Yes, master delft is often on the back side of the Chicken or Egg equation, and yes we will take them down like the cowardly pigs they are, murdering innocent women and children. However, I do agree with delft that the unmanned drones, are responsible for the killing of innocent civilians, and find that most contemptable myself, and certainly un-American. Get the drones out of office and out of my airspace!

Yes, we are typical Americans, I'm afraid the wishy washy apology tour of our current regime looks more like wishy washy indecision by wishy washy individuals that lack a sense of moral terpitude necessary to deal with hatefilled, cruel, merciless heathens, bent on the destruction of those unwilling to "submit". Now I guess if you choose to "submit", then you can tell us what fine upstanding world class leaders they are when those nice little terrorist are your masters. We will have regime change, and we will throw the bums out, and we will get back on the pathway of righteousness, because thank God, we are still typical Americans. So, you choose your own path, but we're going to fight for our freedom, and we are armed and dangerous, and as long as our God will help us, we will stand!

VERY VERY typical American mindset, they have done harm to us, thus they are evil, thus it is in our right to do whatever we need to stop/punish them.

While I am not going to defend the terrorist for that the did, but when you go after them and in the process of killing innocent people, it also means the terrorist's cause became more attractive to the non-terrorists, so they too will became terrorist.

One of the biggest problem with US foreign policy is that they see everything through the gun barrel, how do we use force to defeat them? Unless you genocide every single Muslim on earth at once, there is no way you win this war.

One thing Romney was correct is that we can't kill our way out of this mess, we have to use economic and cultural influence to help them, so that the life of an extremist will be less attractive to them. But with US economy in deep recession, and the power influence of military industrial complex, changing the course won't be easy.

Navy orders most local ships to sea to avoid storm | HamptonRoads.com | PilotOnline.com

    NORFOLK

The Navy ordered Friday nearly all its warships in Hampton Roads to head out to sea to ride out Hurricane Sandy, which is making its way up the East Coast.

The aircraft carrier Abraham Lincoln, which has been docked at Norfolk Naval Station preparing for an extensive overhaul in Newport News, was sent to Norfolk Naval Shipyard in Portsmouth to avoid the storm, according to Mike Maus, a Navy spokesman.

Adm. Bill Gortney, head of the Navy's Fleet Forces Command, gave the order Friday afternoon for at least 26 ships, according to a Navy news release. Weather conditions at sea should be calmer than along the coast.

“Based on the current track of the storm, we made the decision to begin to sortie the fleet,” Gortney said in the release. “The current timeline allows them enough time to transit safely out of the path of the storm."

Under the order, at least 21 vessels currently docked at Norfolk Naval Station and two at Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek in Virginia Beach will head to sea by Saturday morning. Included in the order are three supply ships operated by Military Sealift Command.

Another three warships are already at sea nearby, while a number of others will remain in port due to maintenance, the statement said.

Hey I'm just curious, do they move the ships to be away from the storm's path with a full set of crew or just the one's needed for a short term reason as this?

As part of the US relief effort for the mid-Atlantic region which was hit hardest by hurricane Sandy, the US Navy sent in 3 major amphibious ships to help out. This is a perfect demonstration of the usefulness of these types of ships in OOTW.

Army inching toward deal for AMPV
By Paul McLeary - Staff writer Army times
    Posted : Friday Oct 26, 2012 7:31:28 EDT
The Army is “close to solidifying the acquisition strategy and releasing the draft [request for proposals] to industry” for the Armored Multi-Purpose Vehicle, envisioned as the replacement for the 50-year-old M113 in the service’s heavy brigade combat teams, said Ashley Givens, spokeswoman for the Army’s Ground Combat Systems office.

And there are hints that, when it is unveiled, it could be a cross between a tank and a Stryker.

The AMPV’s analysis of alternatives was completed in June and is still being staffed, Givens said.

She added, however, that program managers will host a second industry day in November, with the final RfP coming in the second quarter of fiscal 2013.

While relatively few details of the system’s requirements have been made public — other than that the Army is looking to buy up to 3,800 mature, proven systems — Givens said one key requirement will be “some level of system commonality” between mission variants and with other fielded Army systems.

Army leadership also appears to be making sure everyone is marching in the same direction. Givens added that to ensure synchronization between program offices, the Ground Combat Systems shop is working with many of the project manager offices “that have capabilities that the AMPV will host. The most recent engagement was with [Program Executive Office for Command, Control and Communications-Tactical] at Aberdeen [Proving Ground, Md.] to ensure we are fully coordinated and ready to accept and integrate network items on the AMPV at appropriate program timelines.”

The two main competitors poised to square off for the work are BAE Systems and General Dynamics Land Systems, which have said they’re interested in offering versions of the Bradley Fighting Vehicle and the Stryker, respectively.

Donald Kotchman, vice president for Heavy Brigade Combat Team at GD Land Systems, said the company has developed a tracked version of the Stryker that builds upon the company’s decades of work producing the Abrams tank, as well as the more recent double-V-hulled Stryker. While the tracked version is not aimed specifically at the AMPV program, Kotchman said, “depending on how the requirements flow for the AMPV, then it would be finalized to be in that competition.”

The Stryker TR was designed to fill a gap in the company’s combat vehicle line, Kotchman said, since it had not offered a medium tracked vehicle up to this point.

Roy Perkins, business director of Army programs at BAE Systems, said the company has had a Bradley prototype for the AMPV ready for two years and that the company could use some of the 1,300 to 1,700 excess Bradleys in the Army’s inventory to retrofit for the program.

“Because of the maturity of what we’ve been working, we think we’re the only company that can economically offer an AMPV,” he said, adding that the company could forgo any big startup costs by using its Bradley line at York, Pa., for the new work.
