Iran claim it developed gun launched laser guide round.

Iran has developed laser-guided artillery rounds designed to home in on stationary or moving targets at a distance of up to 20 kilometres (12 miles), Defence Minister Ahmad Vahidi told state media Monday.

State television showed images of artillery being fired, saying it showed the precision-guided ammunition in action.

No details were given on the technology purported to be used.

"Iran is now one of just five countries in the world able to manufacture these sorts of weapons through domestic technology," Vahidi said.

The Islamic republic is subject to a UN embargo on foreign arms imports because of suspicions over its nuclear programme.

It frequently announces domestically produced, hi-tech breakthroughs in the military sector, though gives few details.

Early this month, it test-fired short-range missiles during navy war games.

And Vahidi last week said new air and sea defence systems, and electronic warfare technology, would be presented next month, when Iran commemorates the anniversary of its 1979 Islamic revolution.

This promises to be extremely valuable to protect naval vessels or missile batteries from attack by cruise missile and the like. I'm thinking of members who promise to destroy D-21D launchers.

If you could somehow get a 155 mm artillery launcher within range (within 40 km) without the PLA noticing, and then somehow know exactly when and where the mobile launchers are going to be firing from, then, you could perhaps knock it out with precision guided artillery rounds.

More than likely, the 2nd Artillery Corp would be effective at hiding and out-maneuvering strike missions with their mobile launchers, so taking them out is going to be far more difficult than just shooting the missile down.

    Re: Self Guided Bullets

I'm surprised the guided bullets had a lower muzzle velocity than the rifled ones. Perhaps the propellant charge was lower. The smooth bore experiences less wear and allows a higher muzzle velocity. For the 30 mm guns on Ex-Varyag that might mean 1500 m/sec or so, giving a greater range. Can you reverse the process and let the round follow a laser that points it by illuminating its back? That would substantially increase the impact of a laser beam on an attacking missile.

    Re: Self Guided Bullets

self guided large caliber munitions are nothing really of a shock. I just read an articular on defense review regarding a self guiding .50BMG bullet. Excalibre shells have been available for a few years so thats not really a shock that some one could make a 155mm knock off.
