12 Dead , 31 wounded in Shooting at Ft Hood Texas

This is tragic. May the dead rest in peace and my condolences to all the families.

Looks like a US Army Major went haywire over being deployed.

I just heard the name of the Major accused in the attack . He has a Muslim name. Major Malik Nadal Hassan. He's dead by the way.

Army: 12 die in dual shootings at Fort Hood, Texas - Yahoo! News

By JAY ROOT and ANNE GEARAN, Associated Press Writers Jay Root And Anne Gearan, Associated Press Writers – 3 mins ago

FORT HOOD, Texas – A soldier opened fire at a U.S. Army base in Fort Hood, Texas on Thursday, unleashing a stream of gunfire that left 12 people dead and 31 wounded. Authorities killed the gunman, and apprehended two other soldiers suspected in the attack.

The shooting began around 1:30 p.m., Lt. Gen. Bob Cone said at a news conference. He said all the casualties took place at the base's Soldier Readiness Center, where soldiers who are about to be deployed or who are returning undergo medical screening.

"It's a terrible tragedy. It's stunning," Cone said.

Little was known about the three soldiers suspected of taking part in the attack. The soldier used two handguns, Cone said. It was not clear if the gunman had stopped to reload.

A graduation ceremony for soldiers who finished college courses while deployed was going on in an auditorium at the Readiness Center at the time of the shooting, said Sgt. Rebekah Lampam, a Fort Hood spokeswoman.

Greg Schanepp, U.S. Rep. John Carter's regional director in Texas, was representing Carter at the graduation, said John Stone, a spokesman for Carter, whose district includes the Army post.

Schanepp was at the ceremony when a soldier who had been shot in the back came running toward him and alerted him of the shooting, Stone said. The soldier told Schanepp not to go in the direction of the shooter, he said. Stone said he believes Schanepp was in the theater.

The base was locked down after the shootings. The wounded were dispersed among hospitals in central Texas, Cone said.

In Washington, President Barack Obama called the shooting "a horrific outburst of violence." He said it's a tragedy to lose a soldier overseas and even more horrifying when they come under fire at an Army base on American soil.

"We will make sure that we get answers to every single question about this horrible incident," the commander in chief said. "We are going to stay on this."

Covering 339 square miles, Fort Hood is the largest active duty armored post in the United States. Home to about 52,000 troops as of earlier this year, the sprawling base is located halfway between Austin and Waco.

Around the country, some bases stepped up security precautions, but no others were locked down.

Fort Hood officially opened on Sept. 18, 1942, and was named in honor of Gen. John Bell Hood. It has been continuously used for armored training and is charged with maintaining readiness for combat missions.

I know and have now talked to people at Ft. Hood. This Major was Islamic and very outspoken against the war effort. A Colonel who worked with him indicated that he was joyful at the shooting of the recruiter in Little Rock, Arkansas earlier this year by the Muslim man and indicated that perhaps more Muslims should respond accordingly.

Not surprisingly, this Major was ridiculed and osterized for these outspoken views within the military.

What is amazing, is that with views like those, that he as a phsychiatrist was allowed to continue working with individuals returning from the war or preparing to go to it.

Added to that, he was set to deploy to Iraq or Afghanistan late this year and had been fighting it.

It sounds for all the world like a repeat of the Sgt. Asan Akbar incident on the eve of the Iraq war in 2003 who also opposed it and fragged the HQ tent the night before the war killing two officers, Army Captain Christopher Seifert and Air Force Major Gregory Stone, and wounding 14 others.

He was captured alive and has since been sentenced to death.

Horrible acts of treachory...and horrific for those killed or wounded by one of their own. Heart felt condolences to all those killed or injured and their loved ones.

Seems like Major Malik Nadal Hassan survived after all. Strange with views like that and he wasnt afraid of going around making them known that he wasn't watched or dishonourably discharged.

I don't think US army have enough psychiatrist right now. They are building facilities across the country to help the soldiers rehab, but you need people to run those facilities,

the army has rules about expressing political views as soldiers. but if he was talkin about the war in private convo you cant really get him on that. for example when i am at school politics is all i talk about since that's what i do, but as soon as i toss on my uniform, things will be done the army way. but if i see a friend in the army in the subway, its perfectly fine to talk about why war in afghanistan is stupid. its one of those rules that is never enforced.

Interesting part to me is that the US Army did nothing to defuse the story that the major was dead when he was in fact alive.

My theory on this is two fold..

1)They were protecting him from anyone that sought to act out revenge on him over these murders.

2) His death was announced to perhaps see if some terrorist group would come forward and declare Major Malik Nadal Hassan a martyr and claim responsibility for the attack..

Just my opinion.

I was just reading up on Akbur another Muslim soilder on deathrow for killing fellow soilders in 2003.

Turns out he had a bachelors in mechanical and aeronautical engineering. I was wondering , with those qual;ifications, why he never made a commison rank when enlisting, he was a sapper in in the 101st airborne.

or is it as simple as, some one make a mistake or that his pulse rate was so low that the paramedic on spot thought that he is dead?

A sad day for America indeed. My condolences to all those that's directly affected.

As with all the incident of similar nature, the question is always why was the tragedy not prevented? Problem is the way criminal law works. Law enforcement can only be carried out when the crime has already taken place. I think they ought to put more prevention element in criminal laws.

Re: 12 Dead , 31 wounded in Shooting at Ft Hood Texas

This might not be religious though. The major was trying to get out of the military and hired a lawyer to do so a day before the shooting. His out-spoken view on the war might just be a way for him to get out of the army and avoid deployment to the front line.

Maybe when he found out that despite all the effort, he is not getting out and going to the front line, he went kaboom!!.

This is pure speculation though.

He survived and is on a ventilator now but in stable condition. A responding female security officer took him down but was also wounded.

BTW, tragically, a 13th individual died last night. So it currently stands at 13 dead and 30 wounded.

This was Jihad within the ranks, plain and simple. Very similar to Sgt. Akbar in 2003.

Hasan had been under investigation for his statements and internet postings which included suggesting that more Muslims should strap on bombs and take the fight to America after the Arkansas recruiter was killed in Little Rock earlier this year, and posting on the internet that islamic suicide bombers were like US soldiers who jump on a hand grenade to save other soldiers lives.

He was very outspoken against the war and was fighting his upcoming deployment to Afghanistan.

BTW, the lawyer he had hired was not the day before (as one poster here contended) and not to stop the deployment, that laywer was hired to help him get out of the military altogether if he paid his substantial student assistance back.

Of course he was being harassed by other officers and probably by some enlisted personnel (though they would not do it openly to his face because he, Hasan, himself was an officer...more like the word getting out about his attitude and the way he was treated and responded to, particularly off-duty). I do not blame soldiers for that, for responding with disdain to one who stands against them in their mission and takes up the cause and mantra of the enemy. I blame Hasan himself, and the system that kept him in the position he was after these feelings and beliefs came to light.

He should not have been working with any soldiers returning from the war zone or deplying to it. In fact, he should have been discharged from the military altogether IMHO.

Yes, I agree. I can't understand why they still kept him when he was already suspected of being sympathetic to the terrorists, especially when he wanted out.

My condolences to all of those soldiers and their families.
