What should be the focus of chinese military research?

play catching up with the west or develop entirely new strategy/technology in the battle field (e.g. rail gun, lasers, power armor and other weird stuff that i haven't think of)?

    any idea guys?

Hypersonic intercontinental bombers, land-based high-intensity ASAT/ABM laser system, gravitational wave radar, quantum computers, ultra-wide area EMP munitions...just to name a few.

The future is fantastic, and the commies are confident.

    Thanks for replying.

What is a gravitational wave radar?

I was thinking that China should research more on unmanned stealth fighter or drones. Air superiority will be critical in any offensive and defensive operation.

Combat UAV's for land, air, sea, and space that are cost effective, can be mass produced/deployed, plus their C&C infrastructure.

For non-military, energy related research should be a priority. This could mean more efficient nuclear power, bio-fuel (micro algae?), fusion power, renewable energy production, etc.

It'd be pointless to have a strong military if your petro-run economy grinds to a halt.

what about space tech? (colonizing moons or orbital military asset)

Any chance that weaponization in the future? or it has already happen even though it is not legal?

The Chinese should focus on making their submarine forces more stealthy, leathal. Development of a catapillar drive, improved acoustic reducing hull, and IR cloaking capablity. Maybe the commissioning of a sub with abilty to engage multipule targets at the same time like the US Arleigh Burke class Destroyer. This could give the Chinese the power of projection of the seas.

UCAV, UAV, Plasma stealth, Non-Fossil fuel engine for armour assests, efficient domestic gas turbine for frigates and destroyers, efficient and advance nucleur reactors for carriers, domestic diesel engine, further enhancment to digital camoflauge, ICBM improvements, laser heating destroyers for satellite damage and gel balistic body armour.

Not a complete list, but some specifics to watch out for.

Nuclear Subs --- HTGR reactors with pump jet propulsion to create fast ultra quiet nuclear subs. Currently the state of the art in propulsion is held by the UK's Trafalgar and Astute class of subs, as well as the Sea Wolf. The PLAN should study the Astute class as a model for future nuclear subs.

Diesel subs --- Fuel cell propulsion. The PLAN should study the U-212 and 214s as the model for its next diesel subs.

Surface ships --- COGAS (Combined Gas Turbine with Steam propulsion). This is also known as recyclable gas turbines. Look to the UK's Type 45 warship. Also fuel cell hybrid propulsion.

Aircraft --- AESA in all fields. Sensor fusion.

National/Strategic --- Development of synthetic fuel and fuel cell technology. Nuclear energy, using small and safe reactors. China should get out of the petroleum habit.

How about something in the vicinity of this baby:

    http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20070806...n_070806132733

The article says that scientists have discovered a way to reverse the "Casimir Effect," a phenomenon that usually causes objects to stick together. By reversing this phenomenon, we can cause small objects to repel from each other on a nano level instead of sticking to each other. I'm curious if the Chinese Navy is aware, or even have researched this technology. I believe this reverse Casimir can be applied to the "mounting points" of Submarine engines to reduce vibration (noise) from the largest source of a submarine's noise pollution.

    Peace

Just wondering about the effectiveness of balistic missiles against a moving target. How practical and feasable is it? Is it even cost effective way to destroy a carrier?

I know alot of people are talking about new chinese ballistic missiles DF-25 fitted with conventional warheads to attack USN carriers. But some defense expert in China is downplaying the missiles' ability to hit a moving target. It will be too easy to detect and evade since it will be launch thousand of kilometre away from the target. Another problem is the cost. they said that it will be a huge waste of resource to use a balistic missiles against moving target compared to when they can just target seaports and airports. It will be more devastating to the enemy.
