I think it's called National Security Agency, based on my crude translation. I think the counter intelligence in China is very well organized. It's partially why China is able to keep its secrets and maintain its "lack of transparency" so well. The fact that Gates had to admit that the US seriously underestimate China's military indicates that China's counter-intelligence is doing its job very well.

Chen and Bo incidents are not the jurisdiction of counter-intelligence, but that of the domestic public security. And they could escape to the US embassy because they got help from some members in the upper echelon of the CCP who were opponents of the current leadership, not because of lack of security. This is not a simple corruption case, where an individual official facing the govn't, but a complicated power struggle inside of the CCP.

I agree those incidents have little to do with domestic counter-intelligence. But the Chen situation is god dang embarrassing to China's Ministry of Public Security. How the hell can they let a blind man escape from house arrest to the U.S. Embassy? Those guards' careers are in the toilet now.

What I don't understand is now that China has been humiliated once, they continue letting themselves be humiliated by letting Chen voice his desire for asylum in America and even letting him apply for a student visa? Don't they know he's going to continue his campaign for human rights in America? Letting Chen go to America is not going to solve the problem he presents to them. If they thought it would make the problem go away, why keep him in house arrest in the first place? As a human rights advocate I like that, but what the hell is going on with the Chinese leadership? I'm surprised they didn't pounce on Chen with a dozen guards as soon as he left the U.S. Embassy and disappear him. Either China's leadership has had a sudden humanitarian change of heart, or they are dumber than we all thought.

I don't know about now but China had a very effective counter intelligence back during the Cold War. You know all those Tibetan fighters trained by the CIA back then? Did you know every single one of them sent into China as insurgents has never been seen or heard from again? Then there was the time when the CIA had intel that a high level Chinese officer wanted to defect to the US. The CIA sent a plane secretly into China and was immediately captured as soon as it landed.

Chen was not under house arrest or anything, he was a free man, so I hardly consider it an embarrassment that he was able to enter the US embassy.

Letting Chen go to America is convenient for China, because there really is nothing he can do except suck up American tax money, many dissidents before him has proven that. In fact, it makes it easier for the government to control the people, by showing them that a foreign power is bent on the undermining China and providing support to any and all individuals/parties that can cause unrest.

You have to realize the one child policy is implemented for sustainability reasons, and it is obeyed by the vast majority of Chinese, Chen is defending a small group that broke the law for their own gains, he does not have much support outside of his clients.

MPS probably had very little oversight of the local police and local officials who wanted to keep a lid on Chen. The MPS has bigger fish to fry. I don't think it was an embarrassment or humiliation. The western press can spin it whatever they like. But they, like Chen, are irrelevant to China.

There are plenty more activists out there and the Chinese intelligence agency's primary role isn't to keep an close eye on those political ideologists unless we are talking about leaking state secrets and such.

Talking about play wits, those Stateside waving flag as if get chen aboard is another major victory against China's inhuman aggression on human rights... China could always play weak and makes it "The US made us no choice but to send the defectors aboard its (US's) way", and lighten the desire for another 100 million "activities" to go to America.

There's a Chinese saying: 不当家不知道柴米贵。 You won't know the price for the household if you never run it. I definately believing some (many) of US senators who drum up every "ideology victory", don't know how all the defectors feed themselves, when even sometimes US governments (vs. senators) wants to tune down the issue.

I for one, are fully support China not only deport people like chen, but also broker a deal to let US take people like him naturalisation into citizenship, to gracefully seal any humanright glitches, EVERY TIME.
