Russians and maybe the tiger are the only ones I think. Most are built to ride the crash in.

After entering the Mediterranean through the Strait of Gibraltar, the Russian nuclear-powered missile-carrying cruiser Petr Velikiy, or Peter the Great, has cast anchor in the Alboran Sea. The crew used its 11-day, 3.2-thousand-mile voyage from the ship’s home base of Severomorsk on the Barents Sea to practice air and anti-submarine defense operations. The cruiser’s mission is part of Russia’s plans to resume its naval presence in strategic areas.

Petr Velikiy is the fourth Kirov class battlecruiser, a class of nuclear-powered warship of the Russian Navy, the largest and heaviest surface combatant warships after aircraft carriers currently in active operation in the world.

The Kirov class's main weapons are 20 P-700 Granit (SS-N-19 Shipwreck) missiles mounted in deck, designed to engage large surface targets. Air defense is provided by twelve octuple S-300F launchers with 96 missiles and a pair of Osa-MA batteries with 20 missiles each. Pyotr Velikiy carries some S-300FM missiles and is the only ship in the Russian Navy capable of ballistic missile defence.

The Petr Velikiy is perhaps the most heavily armed surface combatant in the world. In addition to her main battery of 20 large and very dangerous ant-shipping missiles, she has a very capable and sophisticated, layered anti-air defense system trhat is capable of wide area coverage, even BMD defense. That multi-layered system consitis of a total of 456 missiles that are on the vessel. She has been modernized and her sensors and weapons systems should be viewed as state of the art for Russian vessels. Her sister Kirov battlecruisers, at least two of them, will be going through multiple year refits to mordernize them in a similar fashion.

Her presence in the Mediterranean sends a strong mesage to the international community. Here are her very impressive specifications:

Displacement: 28,000 tons Full Load
Length: 827 ft
Beam: 94 ft
Draft: 30 ft
Propulsion: Nuclear propulsion with steam turbine boost, 140,000 shp, 2 shafts
Speed: 32 knots
Complement: 727
Aircrew: 18
Flag staff: 15
Sensors: ·
- Voskhod MR-800 (Top Pair) 3D search radar on foremast
- Fregat MR-710 (Top Steer) 3D search radar on main mast
- 2 × Palm Frond navigation radar on foremast
- 2 × Top Dome for SA-N-6 fire control
- 4 × Bass Tilt for AK-360 CIWS System fire control
- 2 × Eye Bowl for SA-N-4 fire control
- Horse Jaw LF hull sonar
- Horse Tail VDS (Variable Depth Sonar)
Armament:
- 20 P-700 Granit (SS-N-19 Shipwreck) anti-ship missiles
- 16 x 8 (128) 3K95 "Kinzhal" (SA-N-9) surface-to-air missiles
- 12 x 8 (96) S-300PMU Favorit (SA-N-6 Grumble) surface-to-air missiles
- 06 x Kashtan (CADS-N-1) point defense system. Eash Kashtan has:
---- 8 x 9M311-1E SAMs with 24 auto reloads
---- 2 x 30mm Auto Cannons
- 44 x OSA-MA (SA-N-4 Gecko) PD SAM
- 02 x RBU-1000 (Smerch-3) 305 mm ASW rocket launchers
- 02 x RBU-12000 (Udav-1) 254 mm ASW rocket launchers
- 01 x twin AK-130 130 mm/L70 dual purpose gun
- 10 x 533 mm ASW/ASuW torpedo tubes, Type 53 torpedo or SS-N-15 ASW missile
Aircraft carried:
- 3 x Kamov Ka-27 "Helix" or Ka-25 "Hormone" ASW helicopters

The most powerful combattant ships in the world without aircraft carriers ofc. Battlecruiser.

One precision on 96 SAM long range he get half S-300F «Fort» missiles 48N6E / SA-N-6 and other half with S-300FM «Fort-M» missiles 48N6E2/ SA-N-20 ABM capable ( 40 km ).

One interesting view of launchers B-203A for S-300

Well, if the Russians proceed with the modernization of two of the vessels...the Admiral Nahkimov has already started its modernization, and the Admiral Lazarev would follow...then the Russians will end up with three very powerful nuclear cruisers by 2020. I believe the first one, the former Kirov (now Admiral Ushakov) will probably be scrapped. It had a nuclear accident in 1990 (I believe) and has never been fully repaired from that.

The Pyotr Velikiy and the Admiral Nahkimov will both be for the Norther Fleet, and the Admiral Lazarev will be for the Pacific Fleet if this all goes through..

The two being refit will get their reactors either replaced or completely overhauled. They will get new radars and sensors and EW suites. Their weapons will be upgraded. Probably to something similar as the Pyotr Velikiy...except in the SSMs. These vessels are supposed to get a new common VLS (like Mk-41) and have 80 cells for SSMs.

So, it will be interesting to see what they do.

Is that a recent pic. Most of the available positions for launchers were not filled.

€1,1 milliard ! normally re-commissionned in 2018, time sizeable.

I don't think the Lazarez back in service one day, because later Russian Navy get new "big" warships, if use 2 Kirov, logic one with NSF and other PACF.

Lazarev is here 42°55'45.17"N 132°25'11.18"E Fokino

IMHO , Kirov-class is completely redundant in current Russian Navy . Ship is too big and too expensive to serve in its intended role as a carrier killer . Smaller and less expensive platforms armed with Yakhont/BrahMos would have much bigger chance of getting in range and launching their missiles . And if Russia wants air-defense cruisers , something with displacement around 10000 t (like Slava-class) would be sufficient and less expensive to build and maintain .

Reason for keeping Kirovs is more political and psychological , something like :" We are still strong , we still have something that no other country have". Putin's administration is trying to revive image of Soviet strength , and such "white elephant" weapons like Kirov-class or Tu-160 serve their purpose as symbols more then as actual military threat .

I agree it is mostly political. And yet they do have these massive hulls, and putting a new common VLS in them with new missiles, 80 of them, for SSM, along with the 456 AAW missiles makes them very effective platforms.

Such ships could form the core of an escort for their carrier(s), or as the lead for a SAG that was anti-ship centric, and still provide unbelievably dense area air defense.

So, they end up getting two birds with one stone. The political statement as well as a vessel that can be very useful.
