I have posted this question in another thread, but after 2 days without replies the thread seems dead (dunno if its normal in this forum but anyway). So i would like to pose this question again.

In those sites there is reference to a very large chinese warship in construction in dalian. Does anyone knows what it is? is it a cruiser...or a rumour ?

Dalian has been buidling Type 51C airdefense destroyer, its probably the 'large ship' the article is mentioning.

i can't imagine it being anything else, otherwise photos would have long been poped up on this forum.

Isn't the Varyag under refitting in Dailan? That would also fit the bill (if someone was totally retarted and didn't know what the Varyag was. )
Battles are won by slaughter and maneuver. The greater the general, the more he contributes in maneuver, the less he demands in slaughter.

hmm... no, from how I understand the article. From this article, it says:

in addition to the construction of a completely new ship, being built in China's Dalian shipyard, that is expected to be very large and loaded with heavy surface armament (probably similar to Russia's Slava-class cruisers).
The words "completely new", "expected to be very large" and "loaded with heavy surface armament" leap off the screen for me. These articles were written in late 2005 and 2006. Leads me to believe that it may be a new surface combatant, as the Type 51B was launched in 2004, and was handed over to the PLAN in late 2005. Good chance it could be a new design we have never seen before.

I'm inclined to believe that this is just a rumour for the reason that if a PLAN "super destroyer"/cruiser was being built in Dalian, or another yard, we'd have seen some pictures of it on the internet, isn't Varyag visible on Google Earth? If there was something major under construction it would show up there. Like Finn, I think this story is the result of someone misunderstanding or mistranslating the Varyag story, during the Cold War, the Western press was full of stories about how new Soviet super weapons were being built, nearly all of which turned out to be completely untrue. But if a photo of such a ship turns up here, I'll be happy to admit how wrong I was!

I haven't seen pictures of Dalian shipyard yet, but I suspect that such a warship is being built with great secrecy and as such, may be built in a covered dry dock, similar to how the British Type 45 Destroyers were built, they were built in a enclosed shipyard which prevents onlookers from looking in.

after that time we should have got some pix in the forums - and the biggest warships I've seen ar 051 C and Varjag in this time.
Of course, after construction of big tankers they could also build up a new big warship, and I'll prefer Dalian shipyard for the first indegenious chinese carrier (Melbourne and Varjag was studied there for a long time) - but there is no big warship-pic and the yard is very open to the elements and the houses in front.

oh boy, I don't know where you get this stuff. First of all, the one that was launched in end of 2004 was 051C (115) and it only commissionned recently. If you are talking about the "mini-slava", 051C is it. It's not this secret and magical warship. All of the large warships in China are pretty much worked on in open. 116 wasn't launched until 2006, probably will enter service this year. It only got its number painted late last year.

Is the 116 (051C) the most recent Destroyer to be laid down? Have others, of any class, been laid down since?
