I'm curious too because AFAIK LN will be building the 056 indoors too so any photographic evidence will most likely come from insiders.

    Re: Type 056 OPV/Corvette

Bow of this 056 under construction seems different from the first couple launched and resemble latter ships of type 054A more.

Design mod of just unfinished construction?

It seems to be the same ship as the one on the right in this photo:

So a deliberate design mod from the original bow?

    I would say no.

The ship on the right in the last picture has than inwards facing portion across the entire forwards section of the bow, while the ship in the 1st two pictures doesn't have this.

I believe that the last picture is that of a different ship and I agree that the new ship's bow does resemble that of the 054A frigate.

Which makes it a better-looking vessel.

That's what I'm wondering because someone commented that they may have cut the bow and welded a new one on. The ship in the first two pic seems to be occupying the same spot as the ship in the last pic, and as far as I'm aware of the ship in the last pic hasn't been launched yet.

Wonder what's the advantage other than look

Six-eight per year is certainly possible (more likely averaging six) with these four yards. But are there more yards working on it?

If so, of course the numbers will increase.

But is we say six, then by the end of 2014 they would have 18 in the water.

It's the same ship, HP hull #2, the original bow was modified to the new style, you can still see the scorch marks from the cutting and rewelding. The modification took place between July 20th and 28th.

Is it plausible the changes were to allow for ASROC on the type 056? So In other words 056 that equips for SCS will be different to HK garrison.

Maybe it was originally planned to finish equipping HK garrison first but now taking into consideration of events heating up they decided to pace up equipping the Hainan garrison?

You don't need to make any changes at all to the 056 to install ASROC-type weapons, you just have to be willing to give up the YJ-83's in exchange. I'm not aware of any ASROC in active PLAN service though.

The 056 is meant to be an affordable tripwire type ship. It's equipped to deal with low level threats but at the same time not be too threatening of a presence on its own. It's supposed to raise the alarm, maybe take a parting shot, and run when confronted by a superior force. A sub might not be an outright superior force so the 056 might hang around and play cat and mouse a bit before running if the situation heats up too much. Torpedoes are sufficient for the 056 and I have to agree I don't think there is room for additional weapons on board.

Depending on the type of superior force that is being confronted, I would add that the 056 can also hold the line and not run if in numbers. When looking back at the last two skirmishes in SCS, the vessels involved were not backed up or replaced by bigger or more capable vessels, rather just more in numbers.

I was thinking maybe the smaller ones installed near the bow like the RBU-6000 like system on the type 054A.
