Chinese strategists may consider this role for their carriers when their carrier force is more mature. Presently, I believe that the potential political, and very real spatial/logistical, challenges of navigating those very chokepoints may compromise that mission.

I still have not received an answer from golly about the fueling system. I assume now that perhaps the system is in some sort of state of preservation until needed.

I like the water wash down system on CV-16. Similar to the USN..I feel it does a much more through job than the Russian system.

Now the Russian system is quite different as demonstrated by the IN Vikramaditya during sea trails. They appear to use one single very powerful hydrant to wash over the flight deck.

Well I guess this is just another small, but telling piece of evidence to show just how thoroughly and comprehensively the Chinese modified the Varyag when they did the re-furb, and just how closely their efforts are modelled on the USN.

How do they wash down the brigde and control tower using USN style? I thought the Russian one is better. They can try to wash anywhere they want

When all are said and done, when every points had been argued till the fat lady sing one point is certain; from those of us who are interested in what the PLAN is doing with the carrier program. They are serious at getting it right.

Did one of the previous photo show that the island/bridge also have sprinkler fitted?

On closer look, I think the Liaoning does have high pressure hoses mounted on the regret of the flight deck; they are red in colour. Can someone confirm? I think there is one in front of the island, another in front of the optical landing light (the meatball?). Perhaps the PLAN decided to have both systems, to test them out since she is a research ship?

I usually just lurk here. But I have to comment because of some of the posts I've seen. I do believe they have begun initial flight testing on CV-16. This is exactly when many folks I know from the Harpoon crew thought it would happen. I'm not sure why there is such emotion about this? Not a big deal really. Another point, I doubt very much the PLAN will opt for an automated landing system... at least not on CV-16. Think of all the naval campaigns since 1914. Almost all have been effected by massive technical problems or deficiencies. The human element has been the deciding factor from Jutland to Midway to the Falklands... often overcoming broken tech and bad design. The Chinese know this. Their naval aviators will be just that-elite naval aviators capable of all types of naval air operations.

High pressure fire fighting hoses. Any carrier would have those fitted as standard because of the highly risky and volatile nature of carrier aviation.

The Russians seem to only rely on those, while USN carriers and the Liaoning also have a sprinkler system installed. Tye sprinkler will clear the flight deck far quicker and more effectively than relying on hoses alone.

I appreciate the post and the supposed chronology. But anyone could write that.

It says right there that it is nothing more than a rumor.

The PLAN ultimately (or someone else either on deck, on another vessel, or possible even a sat pic) will publish a picture or video of this occurring and until that happens, it is all conjecture.

I happen to believe some touch and goes and perhaps some traps have occurred. But all we have are rubber marks on the deck. One day (hopefully soon) we will see actual photos or videos like other countries do. Heck, even with all of their problems, the Indians have already long since showed the Mig-29K landing on (being trapped) and taking off from the Virkamaditya. Those videos say more than skid marks, or chronology printouts, or "hopeful" posts could ever say.

In flight ops, the Indians are further along and confidant enough to post it to the world. It punctuates their investment and expenditures to other nations and to their own people.

We should expect at some point the PLAN to do the same thing.

To be fair, it is NOT the Indians, it is the Russians doing it, they build the airplane, the carrier, the pilot, the landing, take off etc... even the ship is still in Russia. And we all know Russia have this capability for decades already, when the ship is being delivered to India next year, then and only then it is full Indian.

There are sprinklers on the Island(tower) on USN CVNs. Don't know about the PLAN.

Under the Russian system if that single high powered hydrant is disabled how do you de-contaminate? The ship would have to get sailors out there in NBC suits and fire hoses.

I will concede that the Russians are in fact the ones who refit the carrier and conducted the landings and take offs to date. My point is that the carrier is capable of it and has demonstrated it. At the same time, the Indians have already taken delivery of many production Mig-29Ks (not prototypes) and they have already inducted those aircraft into their military service and are flying them, and testing them for ultimate carrier operations. I expect once the carrier is handed over you will see them rapidly do the same thing.

We need to see that type of thing, sooner or later, from the PLAN...and I expect we will. We are just going to have to wait for the PRC and the PLAN to do it and show it in their own time.

I'd be interested to know if the J-15 is now actually in operational service production. I would think so since they have had those 6 prototype/initial production aircraft for something like two or more years. But, we have yet to see numerous production J-15 aircraft painted in PLAN colors accumulating at a PLAN airfield or conducting flight operations on land.

That's a nice, higher-res pic of the Virkamaditya. Interesting to see that system...I would hope that they have more than the single nozzel because I am not sure that one will reach all of the deck adequately to do the deontamination necessary. Anyhow, it's a nice pic. I'll pots it on the Carriers II thread, it deserves a spot there.
