Sounds like your typical China Threat alarmist piece.

There is no way any Indian paper is ever going to get an exclusive scoop about weapons test or aircraft first landings. They are guessing at best and making this up as they go along.

Deployment next year is simply stupid and just not going to happen unless something drastic happens.

So, now you have all the key ingredients for your typical China Threat recipe.

You have exaggerated military threat (nonsensical emphasis on weapons testing), unrealistic time table (deployment next year), all build up to the act of ringing the China Threat bell (China has become increasingly assertice).

But because this is an Indian author, he cannot help but throw in a cheapshot at the end to try and put China down a little, so in comes the irrelevant story about engines.

If they want to keep repeating the same tired old lines, at least they could have tried to be creative about it.

She is still on builders trials, I suppose. Her number has not been painted on. Indeed these trials might take a year if something untoward happens. I well remember how much time that old CVL RNethN Karel Doorman spend at dockyards being repaired and refitted. And after builders trials there will be two years(?) before all systems and procedures are starting to come together.

yeah. I think that many indians resent china´s acomplishments. The two countries have +/- the same population, with each country having hundreds of millions of poor people in their ranks, but china is economically and technologically (far) ahead of india. Thats why they always try to belittle china, without aknowledging that india is lagging behind. You see this in indian news sites, and military forums like MP.net and keypublishing, etc.

But this is OT, and i dont want to derail this thread.

Projecting much is he? WS-10A might be too new for him to know about, which I might forgive; but what would he call those things that have been powering J-6, J-7, J-8, Q-5, Y-8, Y-10, Z-9, etc. all those years?

From people daily. This picture should once for all silent all those critic of Varyag Engine. She is a beaut isn't she?

BEIJING - China's aircraft carrier left port on Tuesday for a second round of sea trials, which are likely to include test flights from the refitted vessel.

"Carrier-borne aircraft will possibly take off and land on the vessel for the first time, as these moves cannot be done in dockside tests," said Yin Zhuo, a retired navy rear admiral and military expert.

He said an important component of the trial will be to test the steel cables used to catch the aircraft and decelerate them upon landing. The cables can bring an aircraft from going 300 km/h to a full stop in just a short distance.

Catapults may also be tested to see whether they can help propel various types of aircraft into the air.

"Of course, another task is to test communication between the carrier and aircraft, and whether the navigation system will lead the aircraft to their designated locations," Yin added.

Media reports have claimed that the deck-based J-15 fighter will be deployed on the carrier, but this has not been confirmed by the military.

The Ministry of National Defense said in a statement that the steam-powered aircraft carrier has completed all refitting and testing work as scheduled after its first sea trial in mid-August, and was heading back out to sea for additional scientific research and experiments.

The carrier was originally meant for the Soviet navy, but the construction on it was halted as the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991. Engineers in the Ukraine disarmed it and removed its engines before selling it to China in 1998.

The vessel, an Admiral Kuznetsov class aircraft carrier measuring 304.5 meters long, and having a displacement of 58,500 tons, has been refitted for research and training in China.

Shi Yinhong, an expert on international affairs at Renmin University of China, said the announcement of the vessel's second sea trial is mainly aimed at letting the Chinese people know how preparations for the carrier are going.

"The people are very interested in the carrier, and the military is telling them about its new achievements during its lengthy preparation," he said.

China will be the last permanent member of the United Nations Security Council to operate a fully functioning carrier once the vessel is delivered to the navy of the People's Liberation Army.

The United States, Britain, France, Russia, Spain, Italy, India, Brazil and Thailand operate 21 active aircraft carriers.

    The US alone has 11.

I notice that they moved the container ship to the dockside where Varyag used to be, which indicates Varyag might not be going back for qutie a while. I think this sea trial is going to take weeks, not days, to complete.

Re: PLAN Carrier Operations..News, Videos & Photos

Those articles have some serious mis-nomers.

    1) There's no catapults on the ship that I and many others are aware of.
    2) The US Navy test catapults in-port daily by firing what is refereed to a no loads..
    3) If any landings other than a helo is made I'll eat my hat..with no salt.
    4) Arresting gear can also be tested in -port with the use of a tow tractor. However I see no arresting gear on the flight deck of the PLAN CV.
    5) The ship will not deploy next year unless China has some magic formula to train the crew. If it does I'll eat two hats..with no salt.
    6) In actuality the US has 20 carriers if you count the the 9 LHD/LHAs in commission. Ships that all other nations would call CVs..

I think the China Daily should say there are hidden 3000 nukes in the belly of the Varyag.

Hendrick, this report is...I am sorry...just full of hooey.

Helos may land and take off, but he talks about arrestor cables so he must mean fixed wing aircraft. The J-15s are not ready yet, or embarked.

Other fixed wing aircraft are not going to land because the arrestor system was not installed...so they cannot stop.

He talks about catapaults. There are none on this vessel.

I am sure they are going to be testing navigation, engines, communications, sensors, etc., etc. machinary, various systems from water to ventillation. Lots and lots to test.

They may be out some time.

And, helos may certainly land and take off. But no cats and no traps and no fixed wing aircraft.

...and that picture alone does not say anything about the engines. It shows no wake and no bow wave.

I do not doubt that she can make her own way...and that picture is a pretty pic...but it does not really show the vessel underway...it shows the tug back away from it is all.
