Why are there so many people aboard? I counted it at least a few hundred. Who are they? What are they doing there?
They are there to get soy sauce.
I mean seriously, it takes a lot of people to operate the ship, there are PLAN sailor fill in navigation and engineering roles (probably multiple shifts), and there are civilians from DSIC who will not only acting as backups for the naval personnel, but also maintain a contingent group in case things need fixing. On top of that we have people from 701st and 708th Institute, reps from various system manufacturers. When fully operational the ship will have a crew of close to 2000, so having several hundred on board for the sea trial is considered normal.

So there is no seventh sea trail ?
See the following post:
Apparently she is back out now until June. I do not know if that is number 7 or number 8...but she is back out according to that pic which I believe was taken after the one with all the people on deck showing her coming back in and being nudged to the pier side by the tugs.
That was supposed to be number 6 I think, so this would be number 7...but it could be one more in each case...I have lost track. Someone should do a time line (which could probably be assembled from this thread) and count them up and show when they were.
Thanks...love those hi-res photos and will use it on my sites regarding the PLA Carrier.Originally Posted by navyrecon
This is what we can gather here on this forum.
first sea trial (10 august 2011 – 13 august 2011) (3 days)
second sea trial (28 november 2011 – 10 december 2011) (12 days)
third sea trial (20 december 2011 – 29 december 2011) (9 days)
fourth sea trial (7 january 2012 – 16 january 2012) (9 days)
fifth sea trial(19 april 2012 – 30 april 2012) (11 days)
sixth sea trial (7 may 2012 – 16 may 2012) (9 days)
total 53 days at sea in 9 months
There could be a sea trial ongoing now however, all the pics we got from this sea trial are wrong those are from sea trial number six. Unless there is new information on this sea trial like announcements for staying clear of certain area's of the sea as done before or announcements by the Chinese media or pictures from the current sea trial. Untill then i will remain very skeptical.

Thank you very much for that...it is well documented.
I believe there could be a sea trial going on now and we have the one pic above, after the return pic from number 6, indicating that she is on the way back out again until June.
If that is so, it would be number 7.
Thanks again for listing those.
Announced 5/21/12 for 5/22/12 to 6/2/12.
