How do Flankers handle a "bolter" on the Admiral K? Pray? Is there room to get down the deck? They come in on angle as well if I remember from the pics so no sense jamming right pedal to get back to the jump
Bolter!! Bolter!!..Bolters suck espically when it's the last recovery at night and you been on that flight deck about 12 hours.. and some young pilot is having a little difficulty catching that wire. . So you gotta stand on that deck until he lands or is told to "bingo" ..

How do Russian pilots handle a bolter? Well being naval aviators they just do.

    Translation..

Bolter = is an aircraft that misses the arresting wire. Hey it happens ..some pilots do it more often than others.

Bingo= is when the aircraft is sent to a shore base because for some reason or another he can't land on the ship. In most enviroments there is a designated landinf feils. But sometimes there is not.

Gauntlet - looking through your pics I noticed one picture that showed a Flanker (looked empty of loadout but the angle was wrong) taking off from the carrier while the carrier was in port. As land was directly in front by a couple miles, but more importantly, some kind of ship was only a couple hundred hards in front and perpendicular to the bow . So at least documented in some cases they can take off while stationary...

BTW - nice set of pics

    This one?

Yeah, it seems that it can take of with the carrier standing still, but as I said, it is very rare seeing the Flanker-Ds taking of with anymore weapons than their wingtip Archers.

So, to get back on sorta like topic: China should look at other planes or up-engined Flanker-Ds if they shall put a airwing on Kuznetsov.

I've seen the USN do this on several occasions. but never with a aircraft fully loaded with ordance and fuel. I saw a couple of F-18 shot off CV-64 in san diego bay. They had just a couple of Sidewinders loaded.

Gaunlet, I concur with sea craft excellent pic collection!

Thank you, thank you. Took me quite some time to collect them all. Still searching, but I havent seen many Su-33 pics I dont have. Only got 19 of the around 24-30 in service.

But anyway, the USN can do that because of their catapults. A luxuary the Russians doesn't have.

Makes me wonder, let's say the Chinese learned enough of the Melbourne carrier.
Is it theoretical possible to install catapults on the Varyag?

Sure. But from looking at the pics of the Varyag I don't see any signs of that being done. It would be quite and undertaking. Very large steam lines would have to be built from the engine room to the level underneath the flight deck. That would require a couple of years of work I guess. The flight deck would need some work to install the catapults. I don't think the PLAN intends to install a catapult on the Varyag. Perhaps on a future CV.

No way, you can't make profits after investing so much money.

So definitely: PLABUDDYs secound alternative seems not to be very realsitic to me.
    one more informations:
the former FRANCE, now SS NORWAY, 2 years after boiler explosion (which damaged the engine room) anchored in the haze off Pt. Klang, Malaysia and is waiting for scrape

to use this ship for casino would be much cheaper than to work with the Varjag ....

Damn that was a lot of rust to chisel and prime on the Varyag
well, the russian su-33s are supposedly fitted with powerful tvc al-31 engines, which the russians consider essential to quick emergency take off if the plane misses the arrestor wire. it would also help alot in combat.

About the smoke that's coming out of Varyag, shouldn't the smoke be coming from the top of the island? If you look at the picture of Kuznetsov, the smoke seems to be coming out from the top.
