The engineering spaces are amidships, level with the Island. Those 'yellow cranes' aren't cranes but scaffolding towers with staircases inside, to provide access for workers from the quayside to the flightdeck. Which implies to me that the normal access route aboard ship at hangar deck level (eg via the lowered elevator platforms) is in some way restricted, or to put it another way they don't want just anyone wandering around below flight deck level and seeing what they are up to, ie cutting big holes in the hangar deck in order to access the machinery spaces below...

This is big news if the stories about naval training with Brazil are correct.

Quote:
Brazil's president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva (L) shakes hands with China's President Hu Jintao during a signing ceremony at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing on May 19, 2009. Brazil's president spent a day of meetings with Chinese leaders in Beijing, during which analysts said he could broach a plan to ditch the USD in his nation's trade with China. Lula met his Chinese counterpart Hu Jintao and other leaders for talks focused on boosting business amid the global financial crisis, but also to signal friendship between two major emerging powers.

In the new pictures of the Varyag their are yellow structures near the aft elevator that appears to me as some kind of crane.
But some one else said that they were just scaffolding with stair cases to access the flight deck what do you think?

Correct^^ It appears the yellow stairwell will provide some easy access to the flight deck. Remember those workers have tool kits and all sorts of equipment. It is not easy to move about a ship in re-work trying to carry all your gear.

The orange structure near the forward part of the ship appears to be an elevator.

As I know, typically catapult capacity is described as weight accelerated to speed. The US C-13 Mod. 0 (short version with 250 feet stroke) launched 35 tons to 140 knots. The C-11 was rated at 18 tons to 136 knots or 32 tons to 107 knots.

Re: Latest Varyag Info and Photos

I think there is a good chance that once the Varyag is completed it would turn out to be the most expensive warship ever. It is really difficult to turn a rusting empty shell into a operational ship, especially for a country that had never built large carriers.

A recent Chinese article said that the current estimate for the cost of completing the Varyag is around 70 billion RMB (around 10.2 billion USD). For comparison, the cost of building a Nimitz-class is 4.5 billion USD if I'm not mistaken, and the new Ford-class carrier's total building cost is currently estimated at 7 to 9 billion USD; the Queen Elizabeth-class carrier is currently estimated at 3.9 billion GBP (around 6 billion USD) but those numbers could go up as the constructions proceed.

There is a good chance that an indigenous Chinese carrier would cost a lot less than the Varyag project.

That is a lot of money by any standard. And consider this.. There is no crew trained up. No aircraft assigned. The PLAN does have it's escorts in palce for one possibly two CVs..

I'd be very interested in seeing how China mans this ship. Where as, correct me if I'm wrong, most enlisted personnel in the PLAN serve for two short years with only one of those years assigned to a ship. So how is China going to man up an CV that will probably have a crew of 2,000+. Because trust me as I've said many, many times it takes years to properly train up a fresh CV crew. And China will have the freshest of the fresh sailors aboard.

Anyone have any answers?????

They should advance the professionalising of the armed services with certain sectors such as carriers and sub crews getting extra signing on incentives for extended a period
If one was offered twice as much as what they hoped to earn in civvy street, and promise of a modern apartment after 10yrs service, I think you would get plenty of takers and perhaps that could be extended to all crucial branches of the military.
Are Navy ships like commercial boats with double crews?

It is only an online rumor, most likely dreams up by people who think China shouldn't build any carriers, and there are a lot of those people in the Chinese bbs. The article actually claims that due to the excess cost, varyag is being canceled. After Varvag moved to the drydock, it basically lost all credibility.

there is not a chance that PLAN would spend 70 billion yuan on Varyag. They are just too cheap for that.

Any comments on the thing lying in the dock that has what appears to be a rail in the second photo. It's that thing circled in the attached photo.

It's not a catapult If that's what your thinking... Plus I see no trough for the cat to fit into on da' roof..(flight deck)

The only ships in the USN with dual crews are SSBNs and LCSs. Don't know aht other navies of the World are doing. If a CVN had two crews in the USN that would be nearly 5000 sailors milling about smartly for several months.

Similarly, the following are the estimates for the 20 ton Chinese catapult. (A cheque in the mail would be appreciated. ):

20 tons to 40 m/s
18 tons to 43 m/s
32 tons to 32 m/s

Assuming length of catapult is 83 m (250 ft.). Can someone convert it to knots?

Electromagnetic catapult? Or possibly it's just some kind of structure that happens to have a pair of railings. But what kind of structure?
