This is not the first time it goes into a dry yard, last time it just got repainted, maybe they only want to do that again, .
Seriously, given the fact that AC is such a hot topic in china right now and all the PLAN propaganda channels are yelling out loud about the coming of AC era, I think this time it will be fitted with full scale of appliances to be a real AC.
P.S, According to an insider (whose post has thousands of replies) of PLAN in CDF, the engine problem has been fixed last year, the ship supposed to go in the dry yard around August 2008, but the leaders of communism party decided that will be too sensitive because of the Olympic game, so they postphoned that till now. Otherwise some senarios in your book would have been almost for real.
Thanks. Very interesting news and info indeed. I will go look at all of those pics.

If they are going to add propulsion while in dry dock, then she will be in there for a while. We shall see, hopefully we can get a good look at some pics of the work while she is in there.

Re: Latest Varyag Info and Photos

Wait a minute...Just about two years ago we all got in a tizzy because the flight deck was resurfaced. Of course assuming that the work on the ship was nearing and end. Myself included because in an US shipyard rsurfacing the flight deck would be the nearly last task accomplished by a shipyard..

BUT...We were wrong. Now look at the ship. The flight deck has all sorts of equipment, trailers , boxes and who knows what else. It will need to be resurfaced. And who knows how much longer the ship will be in the ship yard as other countries are turning out LHD, LHD, CV, CVN..etc ..etc like pancakes..

You'll see the first position clearly o the right hand in the middle of the last pic, the secnd position (dry dock and peer) was on the left near the blue store houses.
And Dalian shipyard seems good enough to fit the hull - remember 051 C class was fittet there ...
On Google earth I have found what appearers to be a ship yard that geographically similar to the photo of the Varyag in the Dry dock.
The dry dock appearers to be long enough for the Varyag, but I don't know if it is wide enough.

sorry your photos did not go with the quote.

Well, it´s no like they have a fleet of planes ready to use in the carrier yet.
And, in the mean time, they have invested their money in all other weapons and technologies like satellites, fighter planes, missiles, cruise missiles, submarines.
They have constructed a powerful technological base that will make an Aircraft Carrier useful when they finish its construction.
But yes, when it´s done, it will be cool to see this new big ship sailing.

Edited.

And it appears that there is an easier access to take pictures of the ship in the new position, since the qualities of these are very good.

I'm starting to wonder if China wants to take it's time with Varyag precisely so it enters service with PLAN after Japan and ROK have got their own carrier projects into service. The way I see it Varyag with a wing of Su-33's would be a far more capable ship than anything those other 2 nations have in the pipeline and China would not want to be accused of upsetting the strategic balance in the region. So they take their time with their own carrier project so they can claim that it's a response to the actions of other nations.

Whatever their plans are, the Chinese military must be enjoying the way they have foreign governments and lots of people like us trying to work out what they're up to!!

Here are a couple of links and the relevant info:

South Korean DOKDO at WWAC
Displacement: 18,000 tons
Length: 655 ft.
Width: 105 ft.

Japanese HYUGA at WWAC
Displacement: 20,000 tons
Length: 650 ft.
Width: 108 ft.

Now, compare that to the Varyag that the PLAN is working on:

PLAN VARYAG at WWAC
Displacement: 65,000 tons
Length: 992 ft.
Width: 237 ft.

there are a lot of reasons for waiting on Varyag. The most obvious reason for delay from 2008 is political sensitivity. But the other reasons could indicate arguments within PLAN head office on what to do with Varyag, possible delays in design of naval fighter, delays in local aircraft carrier. Could be a lot of things.

All the recent event indicates is that they want to do a lot more work on Varyag, we just need to see what kind of work that is. btw, if this was actually done in HuDong shipyard rather than Dalian, I'd feel a lot better.

Re: Latest Varyag Info and Photos

I have noticed that the PLAN has not painted the island and left it with the Red primer. I wonder if they plan to remove the island in order to gain access the engineering spaces so they can install new turbines & drive shafts for the propellers.

Removing the island would be unecessary in order to access the engineering spaces, primarily as it is in the wrong position. As you can see in this diagram, if you remove the island and carry on down you quickly meet fresh air as the island is sponsoned out to the side of the hull. To access the engine compartments and install new boilers and turbines, you could either go downwards from the hangar deck removing the intervening compartments, something which could already have been doen as the flight deck would be unaffected by this route. All the equipment needed can be brought onto the hangar deck via the deck edge lift openings on the starboard side. Of course the ship would need to have been tied up starboard side on to a shipyard with extensive heavy engineering facilities close by for this to have happened...

Alternatively the engineering spaces can b e accessed form the side by drydocking the ship, cutting large holes in the side of the ship below the waterline and installing the boilers and turbines that way. Did someone say she was on her way to a new drydock facility?

included here are some photos of work being carried out on the French Charles de Gaulle to illustrate the methods mentioned above:

Edit..Obi Wan beat me too the answer..great job! Obi Wan..that is the same device used on US CVs to access major engineering re-fits.

Usually that sort of work is done through an access hole cut in the hangar or cut in the side of the ship in drydock. Removing the island would accomplish nothing whereas the Island is offset from the hull.

I posted this some time ago in this forum regarding replacement of engines;
Quote:
Please read carefully. My opinion only..the technology does exist to change the power plants without a large pier side crane. Whether or not the PLAN has it I don't know. I know the USN has pulled reduction gears {they are very large} out of carriers. Also replaced nuclear power plants power cores. This is accomplished by cutting large holes in the decks above and rigging a crane in the hangar deck and lifting them out. The hangar on the Varyag has to be at least 6.5 meters high. High enough for a heavy lift crane. The engines could be disassembled in sections and then lifted out. And the new one lifted down and assembled in the engine room. Or as in the case of the USS Saratoga in the '70's a hole was cut in the side of the ship. But you all say this was not done. We all will just have to wait to see what happenes.

I don't know where Obi Wan got his photos. But I got the bow shot at varyagworld.com. The ones on the previous page that I posted..

Some "guru" said jobs can be done outside the dry dock have all been done, otherwise it won't be where it is right now. I guess Mr popeye can explain what is that mean and how long normally the final stage will take for an USA CV since he has a lot experience.
