basicaly, it's just talking about China want the south sea to become what it's called 'China Lake'. And with carriers it can do so. The reason for Beijing to decide to build carriers is due to the relation change with Taiwan. So that Beijing doesn't need to build more subs. Oh, of course, it also 'confirms' China is thinking about building carriers now.

Thank you kickars. Different day. Same story. When will it ever change? Time will tell.

By the way today the USN has commissioned it's second CVN since the PLAN has taken possession of the Varyag.

Actually, the article says that Washington Times said that South China Sea would turn into China's lake once PLAN acquires carriers. You need to becareful with the translation. But yeah, there's nothing new.

Wow, that article is kind of sloppy. The two CG images don't even look like each other.

Re: Latest Varyag Info and Photos

It is rare for me to find myself in agreement with the majority, but this is one such moment

In addition to the factors raised and appraised correctly by other posters, I think people need to look at this and the Aden deployment through the prism of "Peaceful Rise" which afterall is the main guiding strategy of Chinese Foriegn Policy.

The Pirate problem allows to the PLAN to deploy ships in a way that cannot be construed as provocative to the established power. Instead this is an understandable deployment in favour of China's legitimate shipping interests. Nobody can say "Why do these ships need to be here" which is what you would hear if China simply deployed to the Western Indian Ocean and Persian gulf areas etc.

I think it can also be taken as a given that once the Aden patrol is established it will become a permenant feature of the PLAN and that ships can be not only rotated but numbers considerably beefed up if required.

I think China's Carrier program needs to be viewed in the same Prismatic Light. What does China need Carriers for? to help better protect its shipping in troubled waters of course and enhance the abilities of the Maritime Police Action in Aden!

I think we have a good chance of seeing Varyag (named of course in my honour) making an appearance this year, it is afterall Anniversay time!

Sczepan, I notice the little hot dog stand(remember) was gone from the flight deck. But still no radars or anything else on the mast. ..

I'm still waiting

FYI, popeye, I found this good pic of the new Changxin shipyards and posted it in my:

2009 Update to my PLAN Site

I believe it is probably where the new carriers will be constructed for the PLAN whenever they are started.

Actually, in that pic it looks like two ship are being constructed. The one to the left being further along than the one immediately to its right. But I do not know what type of vessels they are, though they do not look like major surface combatants for the PLAN...more like auxillariers or support ships if they are military.

Re: Latest Varyag Info and Photos

the bow of the left ship to me seems to be to sharp (pointed) to be a merchant or support vessel, so I think they ar for military use;
we could tell more when the ship become more finished

It's interesting. While the Chinese are building their carrier at Changxin, the US will be building the Gerald Ford in Virginia at the same time, and the UK will be building the Queen Elizabeth.

We will see all three (and maybe four if the Chinese build two at a time) major carriers in excess of 60,000 tons coming togther at the same time.

That will fuel tens of thousands of posts and views here on SD.

BTW, I believe (Ich glaube) that the two vessels building to the left, next to each other there in Changxin could well be military, they just do not look like major combatants. More like auxilliaries of some sort.

It could very well be the stern, and below the waterline, the stern of merchant vessels do taper off very rapidly. I think the beam also seems too wide to be a military vessel.
