If you could get a photo from that same spot today and Varyag was sitting lower in the water, then wouldn't that suggest that something very heavy has been installed, perhaps engines?
Could be. could be other things. Such as>>> The basic fitting out of the ships equipment. There are all sorts of motors ,small generators, work shop equipment, damage control & fire fighting gear that need be installed. Also equipment the crew needs to live such as bunks, lockers and galley & medical equipment. You would really have to see all the equipment that need be in a ship that size before it could get underway.

In that old pic that was just posted a ship sits so high is a lack of fuel, supplies and munitions. Of course we had this discussion before in the previous Varyag thread.

Popeye, here's a pic of the entire vessel showing what appears to be the darker grey coating on the entire flight deck. What do you think?

Re: Latest Varyag Info and Photos

I find it very difficult to get good and recent pictures for the following items even in the Chinese web sites:

Varyag
093 Sub
094 Sub
WZ-10

Hope the situation improve soon.

Even if they appear on Chinese internet, I bet the censors will delete them just to be on the safe side!

Re: Latest Varyag Info and Photos

Mao, what is depicted in that picture is zinc chromate(yellow) being applied to the flight deck of the Varyag. Zinc Chromate is a primer used prior to the application of paint or some sort of epoxy surface. In this case of the Varyag it was reckoned that the zinc chromate was applied in prepration for coating the flight deck with non-skid.

Re: Latest Varyag Info and Photos

Can someone inform me what tonnage of this varyvag is?
Is this ship medium sized or big sized for the carrier class.

Since the ship is so big, it has to be nuclear powered?
(I don't think diesel power is economically viable)
What type of nuclear reactor needed to fit in?

CHina is planning to use Su-33 foldered wing aircraft for the carrier.
Are they planning to license -produce the basic model of the russian su-33
and fit /w all indeginous parts inside, including the turboengines?

Once completed, would this ship go to the south sea fleet?
They have more spaces available for operation.

At 59,000 tons it is basically the same size as an old USN Forrestal class. So it would be large.

We are 99% sure it will be conventinally(desil or gas turbine) powered

China some months ago signed a contract to purchase 50 Su-33 aircraft. I do not believe they have the liscence to manufacture the aircraft.

I do not know.

This thread and other Chinese CV threads contain all the answers to your questions if you want to search them out.

Thank God for Wikipedia

Size-wise, the Admiral Kuznetsov class is somewhere between the baby carriers of the British navy and the super carriers of the USN. It is conventional-powered. Larger carriers like ships in the Kitty Hawk class were also conventional-powered.

In my opinion, it is highly unlikely that the Varyag would ever become a real surface combatant, a training ship -- maybe, the lack of a reliable powerplant is the biggest issue. (As a side-note, whenever I see Varyag, I wanna pronounce it as "Viagra.")

-------------------------------------------
Detailed info for the Admiral Kuznetsov class:

Displacement: 43 000 tonnes light
53 000-55 000 tonnes standard
66 600-67 500 tonnes full load
Length: 300 metres overall
270 metres at waterline
Beam: 73 metres overall
38 metres at waterline
Draft: 11 metres
Powerplant Steam turbines, 8 boilers, 4 shafts, 149 MW
2×37MW turbines
9×1500 kW turbogenerators
6×1500 kW diesel generators
Propellers: 4 with fixed pitch
Speed: 32 knots
Endurance: 45 days
7100 km at 32 knots

Complement: 1960 crew
626 air group
40 flag staff
3857 rooms

Armament:
Guns 8 × AK-630 AA guns
(6×30 mm, 6,000 round/min/mount, 24,000 rounds)
8 × CADS-1 CIWS
(each 2 × 30 mm gatling AA plus 16 3K87 Kortik SAM)
Kashtan CIWS gun and missile system
(256 missiles, 48,000 rounds; range: 0.5 to 1.5 km)
Missiles 12× P-700 Granit SSM
18× 8-cell 3K95 Kinzhal SAM VLS (192 vertical launch missiles; 1 missile per 3 seconds)
ASW 2 × RBU-12000 UDAV-1 ASW rocket launchers (60 rockets)

Aircraft:
Fixed-wing
12× Su-33
5× Su-25UTG/UBP
Helicopters 4× Kamov Ka-27LD32
18× Kamov Ka-27PLO
2× Kamov Ka-27S

Smile Re: Latest Varyag Info and Photos

All carriers (along with other ships/subs), when not deployed, are used for training- personnel rotate, and the skills must be learned/maintained. The CV-67 was intended to be a Naval Reserve/training ship but was pressed into service like a regular CV, deploying to the Med./Persian Gulf, even though the USN had 11 other carriers.
Quote:
Since the Bottom-Up Review in 1993, the Defense Department routinely categorized the aircraft carrier force structure as consisting of 11 active carriers and one operational reserve/training carrier. In response to Quadrennial Defense Review analyses and a six-month deployment in 1997 with an active air wing, DoD reevaluated the concept of employing the John F. Kennedy (CV-67) primarily as an operational reserve/training carrier. As a result, this carrier was fully integrated into the active fleet’s deployment schedule, while still functioning as a reserve and training asset when not operating in forward areas. http://www.globalsecurity.org/milita...tgru-intro.htm
So, I don't take seriously any prediction that the new and only (for at least few more years) PLAN CV will be used for training purposes only. Once enough personnel had done their training, the ship will be in the real-world ops. And even during those, training is an ongoing process. I know bd popeye will not be slow to confirm all of the above!
