Re: Latest Varyag Info and Photos

this is the Varyag pic from the internet.
the pic shows there is some smoke from the structure.
now, nobody knows what's going on, some body think maybe is welding work in the structure, some body think maybe engine testing.
I hope is not on fire like Russia did the job in the 956EM Sov.

On USN ships diffrent type primers are used on diffrent surfaces. It depends on what the surface is used for. For instance on the flight deck if I remember correctly a blue primer is used. This because the non-skid is an epoxy tha requires good adhesion. I guess the blue primer allows for better adhesion.

If you click on the link below and enlarge the picture as large as your computer allows. You will see the true texture of the "non-skid" the USN uses. I would assume the PLAN will use a similar type.

http://www.navy.mil/management/photo...-3729H-049.jpg

The red or rust colored primer is the greneral pourpase primer used on most upper deck surfaces.

That pic has been around well over a year...Previously it was believed that the smoke came from a building in the back ground.

Re: Latest Varyag Info and Photos

thanks popeye.
the pic in the websit show the texture of "non skid" clearly. and we can see the catapult crews on duty.I used to paint "non skid" texture on sundeck and stair,I think they are the same.
this Varyag pic seams the deck and the hull have been painted one coat of primer, the ship was on the dock with out water, maybe it was being painted.
I think this pic is between the new and the old.the old pic I saw that the ship looks terrible.
you are right, the smoke came from some where of the ship yard.

The yellow was a zinc chromate primer for the skid surface. The red is a primer for the structural surfaces prior to painting it in fleet colrs, and in order to proterct it until then.

There are different colrs of grey as final coats. Popeye, who is a very experienced US nany retiree with a LOT of experience on carriers, indicates that the last picture from the side, showing what appears to be a darker grey paint on the ski jump, indicated that by its look it appeared to be the final non-skid surface, but that he would have to see more pictures to be sure.

Re: Latest Varyag Info and Photos

Flight deck look great when the surface is new and all the markings are fresh. But after one two week at sea period with the airwing aboard that newness wears off fast! Why? arrested landings, jet blast, tire marks , fuel spill, hydraulic fluid spills..it all adds up....Sometimes we sailors had to scrub the flight deck...We called it SCRUBEX!

These are evolutions that the PLAN will need to learn to keep the ship clean and operable.

Re: Latest Varyag Info and Photos

the second pic in the websit is the best pic what I see.
we can see the whole ship and it is complete painted. so, as Propeye said these are evolutions that the PLAN will need to learn to keep the ship clean and operable.
Propeye,it is possible help him show the second pic in the post, not locked in the sit.

Re: Latest Varyag Info and Photos

I can't read Chinese. But if someone IDed that second ship as a PLAN Cv they need to be beat about the head and shoulders with a blunt instrument. If not, my apoligizes!

Somebody has the rest of those new pics for the Varyag..So post 'em! If I could find them I would. But I cannot find them.

This one looks rather new to me (painting), though it's not really good quality.

Re: Latest Varyag Info and Photos

I think that's just another version of the photo that appears on the navy section of this website, the flags on the flight deck edge look to be in the same positions.

http://www.sinodefence.com/navy/surf...aftcarrier.asp

I've always been struck by how high the Varyag is sitting out of the water in that photo. I've always assumed that that is because the photo was taken soon after the Varyag arrived in Dalian for it's "conversion," the Ukrainians had gutted the hull to make it unserviceable and the hull was light and so sat higher in the water. If you could get a photo from that same spot today and Varyag was sitting lower in the water, then wouldn't that suggest that something very heavy has been installed, perhaps engines?
