I think 2 to 3 years they Varyag will be ready to go. My reason.

1. One year for poplusion and electrons.
2. One year for aircrafts, and training.
3. One year for combat ready.

Total 2 to 3 years.

Well, she will launch before the last two are complete and I believe she will launch in 2008 sometime, but that is just my opinion. After that, it will take the PLAN several years to become proficient in carrier air operations. They will get planes on her fairly quickly I think, prtobably SU-33s purchased from Russia first. But it will take five years or more for them to become truly proficient and to develop all the logistics, training airfields, recruiting, and philosophies necessary.

Re: Latest Varyag Info and Photos

Basically China's biggest concern now is Taiwan, once that is resolved then PLAN can develop a blue navy and use Taiwan as the base point to project outward.

Taiwan is currently doing a lot of subtle moves and PLA is watching closely for what is going to transpire in 07 and most important in 08. Right before the Olympic and before Chen Shui-Bien leave office.

Having an inexperienced CBG is not going to help but hinder the PLAN. IMO

Re: Latest Varyag Info and Photos

congratulation
indeed, it's an new one after a long time of waiting,
and it's the first pic we got from inside the yard.

The ship seems to be very finished (only by colour) - but what's actually on the island - which antennas and equipment we could see there?

I wonder, if there is only one picture made. I think pretty soon we will see more of them (could you post more or give a source?)

Thanks tphuang. Finally a new picture! I cannot wait to see more from this photographer.

I really can't tell much by this picture. When I see more pics I will give my opinion.

Question Re: Latest Varyag Info and Photos

I found this '05 article but no real new pictures. I wonder where/how this new picture was found - I search on Google and can't find it!

Well, there's not a lot to see there, but the pic does show a very clean and good looking bow section from the dock side and is a picture I certainly had not seen before.

I join with the others in hoping that we will soon see more pics of the Varyag and its current condition. All of the work, the extended dry dock time, all of the clean-up...all of this is not cheap and has been accomplished to some purpose. The painting of the Varyag in official PLAN naval colors, and particularly the application of the non-skid primer and finish all incidate to me pretty clearly what that purpose is going to be.

Time, however, will be provide the ultimate answers and I, like everyone else, am anxious to see what those answers will be.

In the mean time, I am hoping we will see more pictures now and more discussion. It's a very interesting and compelling topic.

Jeff since you mentenioned the non-skid primer. if you look closley to the ski ramp it looks as those the finished non-skid surface has been applied. It appears to me to be a nice grey color...intresting...

Actually, as the pic that starts this thread shows, the yellow primer has already been painted over as of late last year. This pic is taken after the yellow primer pic:

I believe popeye is indicating that it now looks to his experienced eye as if though the final coating for the non-skid surface has been applied. I believe that final coats of surface coverings have been applied to the deck too...short of the operational markings for take-offs, landings, parking, helo spots, etc.

Re: Latest Varyag Info and Photos

Gentlemen, no-skid is dark grey and has a textured or rough appearance. To my eye it looks as though no-skid or a similar surface has been applied to the flight deck. To be sure I need to see more pics. That Russin flight deck looks worn to me.

I have to go to work...

Re: Latest Varyag Info and Photos

thanks Jeff.
also the picture you just showed above is nice, we can see the whole ship,
I think this pic as same new as tphuang showed in the post.but the structure of the ship is under dark shadow, seams not painted yet.
maybe there is still some installation on the structure.

Actually I believe that the picture tphuang posted is newer. The ski-jump ramp at that angle looks to have a darker surface coating and this is what popeye was referring to as a potential final non-skid coating on the carrier deck. It would be nice to have a newer, full view picture like the one I posted but that is newer to verify this. The one I posted is actually from late last fall I believe.

do you mean the deck should be painted for two times after the yellow primer? and we always see the hill is grey collor,do they use 3 deffint kind of collor primer paint on the ship? - the hill is grey, the deck is yellow, the structur is brown(dark red).
