This is my first post and I have not read all posts on this site. But in the ones I did read I missed a discussion of the purpose of PLAN aircraft carriers. Soviet carriers looked very different from USN flattops, because they were mend to defend themselves and SLBM carrying submarines, while the US carriers are mostly employed attacking ground targets.
So what's the main purpose of PLAN carriers and what would that mean for their configuration?

In answer to your query..It all depends if the PLAN wants to follow the Russian example or USN example of operating CV's. Do they want to be able to project power or be a regional or coastal navy. Only after they have perfected operating a CV will those decisions be made. Right now you guess is as good as anyones.

　　宋健说：“报上老说航空母舰，我也没有确切的消息，但是我猜他们在干，而且(用了)相当大的力量，也还 不只是一艘，他们准备干几艘。”

　　随着财力、人力和物力的迅速增长，宋健认为，中国现在有能力加快速度全面赶超世界先进水平。他说，中国 不仅已经开始建造航空母舰，而且在建造大型客运飞机和大型运输机方面也有很大的进展。在超级计算机、生物工 程、资源勘探等许多领域中，中国都达到了世界最高水平。

Whoa. Thats 73 billion dollars. I guess china is aiming towards nuclear supercarriers. Each US carrier costs about 6 billion dollars to build.

That is a mis-translation. 1亿=100 million, not 1 billion. therefore 500亿 is 50 billion yuan, roughly US dollar 7 billion.

If I had to guess, I'd say the color difference is due to material and/or coating differences. Maybe the new mast is aluminum vs the steel superstructure?

Anyone want to speculate about radar choices? If they stick to the land training base as a model, a Top Plate will be put on the new mast. Has anyone read or heard anything about the Chinese ordering a set of Russian Sky Watch radars to put on the superstructure? Would they even bother and just use a domestic phased array radar?

looks like they are setting it up to install something like the Foremast that they have on 051C and 054A (so a Sea Eagle volume search radar and possibly other sensors).

Honestly I thought the mast would similar to the mast seen on USN CVNs. Appears I was incorrect on that aspect.

It's finally great to see some real progress on this ship.
