Don't know how credible or significant is this report but it does quote Janes.
Looks like PLAN is still working on the old Hans. It claims the latest 5th boat is 115 decibel at 33 knots, better than LA class. And when the battery is charged, the reactor can be shut down. It can run at low speed of 11 knots for hundreds of hrs with 95 decibels, approaching the level of Seawolf.
no credibility at all, just your usual rumour on Chinese military sites. The worst part is that these news keep on getting recycled, so you see them popping up every few months.

I will tell you why. They have nothing new. Or they are very secretive. I thinks it's a combination of little of both...

I think it is more of combination of they don't have anything new.

Even if they do, the PLAN will still not have a SSN on equal terms with the Los Angeles or Trafelgar, or even the Akula.

And I'm not even talking about the Sea Wolf or Virginia.

Horray!!! #8 kilo is here, finally fufilling the contract that was signed four years ago. Personally, i think this is the last submarine china will recieve from russia, unless the russians make somethign really good.

ST. PETERSBURG. June 1 (Interfax) - The Admiralty Shipyards transferred a
diesel-and-electric-powered submarine of project 636 (Kilo) to China this week,
said the press service of the St. Petersburg Economic Development, Industrial
    Policy and Trade Committee.

The first submarine was transferred to China in 2004. Overall, the shipyard
has built five submarines for China under a contract signed between
Rosoboronexport and the Chinese Navy in May 2002.

The contract is worth $1.5 billion. It was agreed that five submarines would
be supplied by the Admiralty Shipyard, two by the Sevmash shipyard based in
Severodvinsk in the Arkhangelsk region, and one by the Krasnoye Sormovo
    shipyard based in Nizhny Novgorod.

The Admiralty Shipyards builds submarines and oil tankers.

Well, with all the fiasco of the way that the Russian shipyards going after this contract and with the delay in the delivery of the last sub. The Russians certainly did not leave any good impression on the Chinese. I guess if we do see another order from China, it would signal Yuan is not going too well. That would be a bad sign for sure.

From my point of view, I don't think the Yuan SSK will be less capable than the SONG. And the SONG class is a modern diesel submarine with overall excellent performance. I think the Chinese are very happy with the way SONG was designed and currently performs. Yuan is also obviously highly influenced by Kilo. China's shipbuilders have learned even more about sub construction since SONG went into production. So I think that Yuan will work out just fine.

The Russians were not very smart in dealing with this contract. I think the amount of time and support for the delivery of the Kilo's seemed rather poor. I wonder how it will make other interested parties view a substantial contract with Russia for weapons procurement for the future.

it's not just this. They were also suppose to deliver the second sov last year, but then it caught on fire. Apparently, they are still optimistic somehow about the situation. They would be lucky if China doesn't ask them for compensation.

Well it happens. Russians know that there costumers don’t have to much other options; where else could they buy equipment?
If you have money and you are not under sanctions you will do your shoping at West. If you don’t have that options only place where you can buy relatively modern equipment is Russia…
And it’s not like that sort of things happens only to Russians. Joust ask Thai navy about there frigates. They weren’t to happy whit Chinese workmanship but they knew that for that price they couldn’t expect better…

unfortunately for the Russians, with the way that the Sov and Kilo deals went down, I just can't see China placing another order. Those orders were put in 2002 in response to the package that George Bush cleared for Taiwan. It's hard to see the circumstances repeating themselves again.

Well maybe Russians don’t expect new orders after interdiction of new Chinese destroyers… Maybe they expect to sell only equipment to China.
If we may see current Chinese emphasis on locally built equipment then Russians are probably quite aware of that to.

I think these might be pictures of the transfer, but I cant be sure. looks like the pic was taken about a day or two before delivery, since the ship is near korea.

Do you also notice that the Indian navy also has pictures of the Kilos moving in the Indian Ocean, and noted it passed through the Malaccaas?

Now this Kilo taken by the Japanese Navy is moving from a completely opposite direction.

If some people don't understand what it means, it means that the 8 Kilos are indeed made from different shipyards all over Russia. The Kilos that passed through the Indian Ocean are those that were made in the northern shipyards and had to circumvent the Atlantic, while the Kilos that passed through the strait between Korea and Japan are those that were made in Siberian shipyards, to be more precise at the Amur region. These only had to make a much shorter trip.

Why disperse the sub production to different shipyards? Well, if one shipyard tried to make all 8 kilos, you cannot deliver them in the time requested. Probably around 2010-2012 instead.

That's the second one? It is frustrating that no picture shows the propeller, could be very well its on purpose. Also, it looks quite compact. Do we know crew size for it? Dimensions?
