Re: Chinese sub thread

but we dont know the size of the 93s torpedo tubes yet, nor do we know the size of the 94s jl-2 tubes(although that definitly is big enough to fit a moskit).

Re: Chinese sub thread

i doubt either the type 94 or the type 93 will have torpedoe tubes larger than 650mm this would require the development of a new torpedoe that would be large and probably expensive

This is a "wait and see" item for me. AFAIK China doesn't have any 650 mm torpedoes. Only the 53 cm varieties.

Iran has 3 Kilo class subs. Currently they are being retrofitted by the Russians to launched the Club-S missiles. They are a direct threat to U.S. aircraft carriers stationed in the Persian Gulf and Arabian Sea.

In the past, the U.S. govt warned Russia not to sell any more Kilo subs to Iran. But apparently that does not stop them from retrofitting them with Club S missiles.

Russia obviously does not give a damn about US complaints, after all, selling Kilos to Iran does not violate any international treaties. In fact, Russia is reported to be selling India Akula class SSNs, a clear violation of nuclear treaties.

Interesting. I havent looked into these nuclear treaties, so which one of them are they violating?
Is it illegal to sell nuclear subs?

The Non-Proliferation treaty states that
1.) Only the big 5 (you know who they are) are allowed Nuclear weapons (India and Pakistan )
2.) Disarmament
3.) Right to peacefully use nuclear technology

There is nothing there that states it is illegal to sell nuclear POWERED warships. Selling nuclear WEAPONS (as in the ones that create a mushroom cloud) is illegal.

no, i mean the vertical jl-2 launch tubes on the 94. the jl-2 is about 1400mm, so it definitly should fit a moskit. acontainier capsule can be used to fill up any extra space.

I guess there is a reason why no navy has yet to mount anti-ship missiles vertically on their submarines...

094 is supposed to be an SSBN...right? Not very good asset allocation if you ask me.

Re: Chinese sub thread

i hate ssbns and the way they are used. they represent nothing more than cold war "posture" weapons, along with ICBMs and intercontinental strategic bombers. they have much more potential than just firing nukes.

think about it...all 16 tubes on an ssbn used to fire long range, high speed anti ship missles. combine with torpedos, and that is one nasty ship. kind of an underwater kirov

That's the same class the Kursk was. The Russians built 13 of these boats. 12 are still in existance. I really don't know how many are operational. They can carry 24 cruise missiles.

That's because of the SALT ll treaty which limits countries to 16 SSBN's the USN has decided to re-configure 4 Ohio class SSBN into SSGN that carry 154 cruise missiles. Talk about WMD....

http://www.globalsecurity.org/milita...-726-specs.htm

The USN still operates 16 SSBN's and the 4 Ohio's will all be back in service in a couple of years.
