For instance, Hyundai started selling cheap but poor quality cars in the late 80s in the US. That bad rep took 20 years to be undone. Only now does Hyundai get serious consideration from your typical American consumer. They were relegated to low income, bad credit buyers, and rental fleets for the longest time. This is an area the Chinese will need to start focusing on to make the next transition, whether it be military or commercial.
Actually, PRC's shipyards have started focusing on this aspect a few years back.

HD have sold the F22P to Pakistan (happen to visit HD while all 3 were still there a few years back), and is now competing internationally for the high end shipbuilding segment for LNG/LPG vessels with some success. They are also entering the cruise liner segment.

It Is Certain That 054A A Frigate Is Large Than A 051 Destroyer

By The Way, This Photo Was Taken In Lushun Of North Sea Fleet Base Yesterday.

054A is probably a little larger than 051, but where do you get the proof that it is certainly larger just by looking at these photos?

Also while this is probably from Lushun, it's interesting to see 548 and 163 in the photo, since they are from ESF and SSF respectively.

No more different than why the USN has the Seventh, Third, and part of the new Fourth Fleets covering the Pacific or the Second, Sixth, and part of the Fourth Fleets covering the Atlantic.

Following the mass sortie of ESF units from the Zhoushan base complex in mid-July, a group of frigates, including JIANGKAI II 548, JIANGWEI II 522 and 524, proceeded to the Yellow Sea to conduct live fires. Subsequently, the group arrived at Lushun 31 July where they surprisingly still are – I suppose the two outboard JIANGWEI’s are 522 and 524 (the NSF only has two JIANGWEI II’s, 527 which went to visit Vladivostok and Wonson late July/early August, and 528).

LUDA 163 and 164 were transferred from Zhangjiang to Lushun in 2008, replacing the decommissioned LUDA 105 and 106 in 10 Destroyer Flotilla.

We shall be safe to say VLS of 054A is largely an indigenous effort by Chinese ,right? Even the missile I believe is not directed from SA-11..

I saw the latest Talwar class Indian Frigate build by Russian. They still used the obsolete slanted launcher which limit the amount of target and engagement speed. If VLS of China was assisted by Russian and Russian possess such technology, surely they will incoporated such technology if money is not a problem from India on Indian Frigate.

I still remember Taizhou(138) and Ningbo(139), the 2 Sovremenny class which were more advance class of Sovremenny class delivered to PLAN rumour to have the VLS instead of the slanted launcher. But it never happens. Instead the old SA-11 launcher is still using.

Russian has not demonstrated capable of deploying pack VLS hot launch capapbility yet. Instead the Chinese catch up with them and surpass....

Via personal close observation( the port visit to HK on the Dec 2009) the system is more mirrored from the US. Mk. 41 than anything of Russian designs.

If that indicates anything, the Chinese should've concluded that hot-launch VLS system is the future.

The Chinese have an amazing capability of reverse engineering, even if they only have pictures and models to begin with...the openly available ll able information on Mk. 41 should've given then a general direction, then they've to figure out material science and system integration...

I can give you all the BMW parts and let you to drive a real BMW. You might be able to put a car together but not the BMW(I am using BMW as an example).

For a shipyard the size of Huangpu, they consistently put out 054As quicker than Hudong, I wonder if the manufacturing method is more efficient here.
