China's more pressing future threat is resource scarcity. In the book "Winner Take All" Dambisa Moyo talks about the impact of China's efforts to control basic resources, which she says is huge, surpassing even the demands around the world following the Industrial Revolution. This talk was hosted by the World Affairs Council of Seattle.

I should have clarified my stance on the quality of the economist plublications. While I think the standard has dropped slightly, I find the Economist less biased in its stories about China than other publications. More often than not it's left up to the writer on how they present their article rather than the policy of the editorial staff and therefore the level of bias varies.
I used this weeks story on some aspect in China to illustrate how the topic matter also has a part to play.In the story about the consequences of flouting China's one child policy, the writer as the title suggests set out to expose the worst punishment practices where essentially there is little room for excuses.

I find it very telling that you think an organization that many Chinese consider to be one of the MOST biased against China, to actually be LESS biased than other publications. I stopped subscribing to the Economist for this very reason. Of all the Western media sources, all of which I and many others consider to be definitively biased against China, probably BBC has been in my experience the least condescending, arrogant, ignorant, and sometimes borderline (sometimes overtly) racist like the rest of the Western media. Though we have also seen evidence of BBC's failures of journalistic integrity as recently as the Tibet riots. Just because the Chinese media is grossly non-neutral DOESN'T mean the Western media is significantly better.
