Sports thread; everything sport realted in here...

So what part sport represent in your life? Are there any atheletes out there?? Anyone whaching sport, live, from tv?? What sports do you follow most dearly??

I like to have some sort of picture from you foreingers of how big thing sports are in elsewhere. Here in finland its a big thing, Olympic winners and corresponding fame makes one a true national hero and to me its the only aspect of nationalism that i can whitstand...

I myself practice sport-shooting whit .22LR smallbore rifles and airrifle. (im going to post a pic of my weapons when i get hands on our family digi-cam again). Im not high ranking, but i regularry atend in national games and including the finnish championship games and finnish reserve organization games and i have few team-medals from those games...

but as armchair spectactor i tend to follow most atleathics in summertime and nordic skiing, ice-hokcey, ski-jumping during wintertime...and of course Formula 1 and Rally world cup...so basicly everything were finns have gained succes...
At this moment, ski-jumping is the number one, as Torino approaches and we have lots of payback to gain from the past years when overal finnish sportsucces has been rather lame...
So we have few german and norvegian members so i would like to ask how much you guys follow winter sports and do you american majority even know of these sports?

but be free and post anything about sports you want here

World Junior Hockey Championship Canada vs. Russia right now in GM Place, Vancouver, BC. wonder who would win, most likely Canada... again. i don't know if this is the final game or something but everyone's getting crazy for it.

UPDATE: Canada won with 5-0 over Russia
and Finland won bronze with 4-2 over US <-- be proud, Goll.

    Sports thread

I just thought it was kind of sad that we have an Eurovision thread, but no sports thread. In light of the world cup starting next month, the NBA conference final that's going to start tonight and MLB regular season, I figure I will start one up where we can talk about anything sports related. Com'on now, what do guys talk about if we don't talk about sports?

Yeah, sports! Let me say this. In 3 years, the Yankees payroll will go down a third. Melky Cabrera looks pormising and they have some pretty nice prospects inlcduing Phillip Hughes. All the Yankees need to get in 2 or 3 years is a solid 5th starter. Then they're set! And I would love to thank Isiah Thomas for giving away our 1st round draft pick! Thank you so much!

I'm guessing you live in New York?

The Yankees, their payroll is never going down as long as the boss is there. Of course, they got a whole lineup of old and overpaid players. But somebody needs to tell Steinbrenner that you can't win every year, rebuild your farm system and get that nucleus that you had in 96.

As for the Knicks, they are going no where. Everyone knows that. I think Zeke just basically ruined the Knicks from competing for the next 10 years. Do the right thing. Get Joe Dumar from the Pistons, you need a real GM to make the right moves.

The Clippers have respect now! It doesn't matter that they lost! They were on the front page of the LA Times. The article wasn't about them losing, it was about how they are no longer the subject of jokes.

    World Cup

Since I live in Germany, the world cup madness has been going on for a few months already and I was wondering if any of you are huge football/soccer fans? How many of you plan on watching the World Cup and what teams do you like?

Personally, I am not a huge fan, but it is amazing how huge the WC is and I will definitely watch a few games. Of course I hope to see an upset or two, with the US making it at least to the semi-finals

So you're saying that Argentina and the Czech Republic will play each other in the Final?! I don't think so.

I'm an American, and I like to watch soccer. I'll admit it. So I'm pysched for the world cup. But the problem is that no TV stations here play anything about it. They'd rather devote 8 hours to reruns of TV shows about old Superbowls than talk about the World Cup. Which is shameful. But in the newspaper today they had a bunch of articles about it. Apparently the World Cup will really effect upcoming elections in France and Mexico.
