Damn... That's crazy. This is an excellent reason why people should not own cars in China.

Well cars are becoming a status symbol in China. My uncle bought a car recently because #1) everyone he knows owns one #2) he works at the Shanghai Auto company .

I don't want to know how the people who are stuck in the traffic jam managed to take care of their business/maintain hygiene during the time on the road...

Well I just read an article saying some people are taking advantage of this and selling food and water to people stuck in the traffic, at inflated price, maybe there are portable toilets or showers available? Hell if it was me i'd go to a hotel.

The solution is obvious: we need flying cars!

well sometimes it depend on the intersection which cause traffic jam. In guang dong some intersection are retarted where the Red light from North and South direction could be 50 sec and then only aloud 12 sec for a green light. The other direction get better timing eventhough not too many traffic on it

This makes the traffic jams I come across daily seem like a walk in the park !

Try Australia, Brisbane. 2 minute waiting and only 15 secs of green light to go.

This seems a liitle more than impossible, if at all they had been on the road for more than 1 day even. As the people cannot stay on the roads for 9 days!
