Movies in General/ Star Trek etc etc

Anyone seen the latest Star Trek Film.
Having been a Trekky fan from the Television series I found it rather difficult looking at a different bunch of actors playing the role of the original characters.

Re: Movies in General/ Star Trek etc etc

I saw it, it was rather good, though it was primarily action/comedy that did pay tribute to the original series but really didn't feature any of the political or moral themes of the various series.

Here's a much more comprehensive review from a more hardcore fan if you're interested.

Re: Movies in General/ Star Trek etc etc

I found it entertaining and the new cast did a good job but they overhyped the movie. Even though Nero's ship was from the future and more advanced than anything else, I expected a new Romulan Warbird and cloaking and some badass battles. Wrath of Khan is still a superior movie. Wait and see the new TV series reboot coming soon.

On another note... Guess who the invading country is in the new Red Dawn reboot? If you're Chinese and live in the US... buy your guns and lock and load. You're gonna be visited by some dumbass racists when this movie opens.

Thanks for the link.
I think this is one remake the world really could live with out.
It is going to be a terrible exploitation film.
I did like the original film, and I am a major China gov critic, but I will not see this film.

I suppose one could take it as a compliment to be portrayed as the antagonists , like the Russians were, but I cant say whether the movie appeals at this stage. Anything gotta be better than the Charlie Chan and Fu Man Chu of yesteryear.
At this stage I think the Russians/ Eastern Europe come across as better Movieworld antagonists must because of the Russian accent and all the James Bond type movies.

Anyway Im a sucker for those religious suspense films so I'll suppose Ill go along and see 'Angels and Demons' though Im getting a bit tired of Tom Hanks

At least in Angels and Demons they have a fictional enemy (Illuminati) to deal with.

We'll see if the Red Dawn reboot actually sees the light of day. The Hollywood gods are angry with China disobeying the orders of George Clooney, Richard Gere, and Mia Farrow. So China should prepare to wage an all out war against Hollywood. I wonder if their arrogance will see the possible massive billions of dollars of damage China could inflict on their industry.

About the Red Dawn remake...

Anyone expecting the Asian girl to be the primary love interest of the leader, who, obviously, eventually falls for for the leader too? .

First off I worked in the motion picture TV biz for a short 16 months as an on set security guard.

The motion picture producers are the people with the real power in Hollywood. they have the money and make all the major decisions. Most producers objective is not political like some believe but profit driven..

I can't wait to see the Terminator-Salvation. When I first heard about another Terminator movie, I wasn't impressed. I was a little tired of the franchise. But I was hugely impressed when I saw the trailer for the new Salvation one. One more week!

Oh yeah, don't forget the transformers and G.I. Joe!

And I too have worked in the industry. And some of them... producers, actors, directors... are out of touch with reality. They are much in the same way they say about Washington DC. They live in their own little insulated "beltway" world.

Yes they are profit driven which means they also don't care about who they affect. Look at the Slumdog kids. Hollywood got criticized for exploiting them. So what did Hollywood do? They in their tokenism brought those kids to Hollywood to show off how much they care by giving a taste of fame and the good life and taking them to Disneyland and then they get thrown back into the slums. If they really cared they would've done something more constructive than showing those kids off in front of the cameras after being criticized. And look how silent they are now after the father tried to sell his daughter off to slavery. Or the boy who got slapped for not giving an interveiew to a reporter so his father can benefit from his fame. And now just last week his home was bulldozed by the government. Where is Hollywood? Maybe another photo op with Gerard Butler will make everything all right.

Anyone want to experience a little schottenfreud? Go try to find a documentary called Overnight. I bought it on DVD so you'll probably find it somewhere. You want to see a nobody who becomes the rising star in Hollywood then crashes and burns all because he was an a**.

All in all you're probably right but mind, there has been some classic films made over the decades that successfully comment about issues of the time.
Charlie Chaplins ' the Great Dictator" ? Satirizing Nazi Germany, On the Beach, Dr Strangelove, To Kill a Mockingbird, Twelve Angry Men. to name a few.

Can anyone recall the name of the movie which I thought was a bit to cheesey to waste money on seeing at the theatre,( I thought I might look for it with my free DVD hire voucher at the local video store) about the American Nuclear Aircraft Carrier that gets transported back into time into the WW2 Pacific war locale. What was the name of the carrier that appeared in the film?

I think the Terminator franchise has a lot more room to develop, then another successful sci fi movie in the 'Alien'
