My main gripe is not so much portraying the Chinese as the main villains but instead of hiring Chinese they hire Korean to further instigate the stereotypes of Asians being the same and not even using Chinese but probably some Korean accented English disguised as Chinese (non-asians wont know the difference).

Well technically Karate comes from China which spread to the vassal kingdom of Ryuuku Kingdom (present day Okinawa) then came to Japan when it was invaded by Japan.

"Karate was originally written as Chinese hand in kanji. It was later changed to a homophone meaning empty hand. The original use of the word karate in print is attributed to Ankō Itosu. He wrote it with the kanji 唐手:からて (Tang Dynasty hand) rather than the present usage of 空手:からて (empty hand). The Tang Dynasty of China ended in AD 907. The kanji representing it remained in use in Okinawa as a way to refer to China generally. Thus the word karate was originally a way of expressing "Chinese hand," or "martial art from China."

But yeah they probably should change the title to Wushu Kid or something.

But yea, once again, a rogue general. That's what I mean by placing blame on individual or organization. Even then, it's fictional account with fictional characters, and the organization takes place in the future, therefore, has no resemblance of the real-life counterpart.

A Drama exploring on how the Vietnam war affected the lives of people in a small US industrial town. I think it won the best picture award at the academy.

Apocalypse? Director FF Capola? Had Marlon Brandon and a young Harrison Ford, a rather strange movie but worth a watch actually. I think it also picked up a few Oscars.

I've heard of the Deer Hunter. My mom bought it (my parents "sweep" dvd stores in hk) and I knew it existed in one of the thousands of dvds inside the cabinet, but I've never watched it.
She told me it's very good(though she doesnt look like the type that watch that type of stuff), but I wasn't really interested in it especially with the name and the strange-looking cover.

But now you've said it, I guess I'll check it out during one of the more free weekends. thanks for the suggestion

I doubt any Chinese will want to take part in this piece of trash, or find their face on something like this, especially accepting it is quite insulting to us as it is.

It's like saying "Hey I'm gonna have a film where your people came to try and invade us, but we kicked their ass. Can you play as one of them?"

@ bladerunner: I thought they were just calling it the karate kid in the US and the kung fu kid in asia? And they're not saying jackie chan is a master of karate - he actually teaches kung fu in the movie - they're just using the same name for marketing and heritage's sake imho, there's no parallel to koreans portraying chinese people in red dawn.

There are so few roles for Asian actors in Hollywood that any Asian actor will play anything. Back in the 40s and 50s when they made a lot of WWII movies, they used Mexicans to play Japanese because there weren't enough Asians to play them. Plus I recall there was a call out for Asians in the area where they filmed Red Dawn to come and play extras.

So are we now blaming China because the Americans who are remaking the Karate Kid movie has no karate in it and is set in China not Japan?

Mickey Rourke is set to play Ghengis Khan in another American produced movie.

No offense but that's why I have a 70% hating rate of Hollywood. I just can't stand all the bias, the stereotypes, and all those disgusting attitudes in the industry.
This is not limited but included: Negative Asian portrayals. White guys date Asian girls and steal them from Asian men, while Asian men don't get any girls.
Always as Triads or mobs
Finding American actors to play historical figures even if they don't fit the role.
Destroying stories.
Poor to minimal attempt to accurately portray other people's cultures.
Very strong theme of Americanism in some of the movies.

And the worst of all crimes ---- remaking movies, buying copyrights, and then completely destroying them by injecting what was mentioned above.

You guys should be familiar with Tong Leung, the guy who's Zhou Yu in Red Cliff. He's got perfect English and even small touch of British accent to it. He's almost a perfect actor. So they asked, why wasn't he in Hollywood. And it turned out he denied the offers when they tried to have him play as those corner store owners. Totally shows how Hollywood treats Asian talents if they aren't women.

They are both worth a watch, however they are at oppsite ends of the spectrum, the "Deer Hunter: is a slow moving drama while the "Apocalypse Now" is a sorta action movie, the only common underying theme is that they are both anti war.and won awards.

If you ever get time Watch the japanese movie :"The Seven Samurai" and watch the American remake in "The Magnificent seven" A different setting and expressed in a manner more familiar to Western Movie goers of the 60's but it makes a aaceptable attempt in following the original Japanese story

It cant be any worse than a film I saw Called "Tarus Bulba".Yul Brynner plays a Mongol chief who sends his son (Tony Curtis)off to some Eastern European country for a education and he falls in love with a European beauty, horrors to the clan folk back home and the conflict of interest.......

Yup, S.Koreans were hired for the film. The props were awful as well. THe standard weapons in the film for PLA was AK47!!!

And despite all these, talking about 'Intelluctual Property (IP) rights' often mostly debated by Amercians, even their film industries doesnt respect other's IP. Ironic isnt it?

Yes that's what I was referring to, along with Dragonball(though not a remix, but it's shit. Almost everyone is white, even the guy playing goku), as well as The Ring, Quarantine(off spanish Rec), and just about everything else you can came up with. They're even trying to get their hands on Battle Royale.
