Facebook clones.

The War of Facebook Clones :Xiaonei.net lauched quietly|&nbsp Cloned In China

"Xiaonei.com definitely is the most famous facebook clone. It copied almost everything from facebook, and its registered users has reached 40,000,000. Xiaonei’s active users are mostly university students. In May 2008 it Raised $430 Million investment from softbank.Oak Pacific is the owner of xiaonei.com, and it’s been sued for its cloning activity. Surprisingly the suitor is not facebook, but another facebook clone kaixin001.com. unlike xiaonei.com, kaixin001.com targeting at the white-collar office workers , is popular for its apps and very fast growing since May 2008. OAK Pacific purchased the kaixin.com domain name and launched a very similar website kaixin.com. kaixin001.com was not going to keep silent, and last month kaixin001 sued Oak Pacific for unfair competition and by now the judgment is still not out.

Another trouble come to Oak Pacific. A internet company Yeejee based in Shenzhen quietly launched a xiaonei.com clone xiaonei.net, which is extremely similar with xiaonei.com. really funny, isn’t it? Now people all put their eyes on OAK Pacific to see what action they will take to cope with xiaonei.net "

Re: Computer Talk!!

This one even better, the floor model showed XP but specs show it can run Vista.

Comuputex 2009??Windows XP????????

Quote:
Is this a phone or a MID? Well the answer is both, and it runs Windows XP. It's called the "DigiCube MIDPhone-50." It uses Intel Menlow (CPU is ATM Z510/ Z530 on Intel US15W chipset), weighs 620 grams and lasts for 4 hrs.
Digicube is an ODM Taiwanese company, so the MIDPhone-50 is just for show and won't be in production.
Snaps of it are located on the bottom of the linked page.

iPhone 3G S announced: $199 16GB, $299 32GB, June 19

iPhone 3GS Announced

Quote:
As endlessly predicted, Apple's unveiled a new iPhone today at WWDC, the iPhone 3G S -- the "s" stands for speed. Although it looks almost exactly like the 3G, it's much, much faster -- some tasks are almost four times faster. Data speeds are upped to 7.2Mbps HSDPA, and the camera is now a 3 megapixel unit with tap-to-autofocus and auto white balance -- and just as expected, it now supports 30fps VGA video recording with editing features. You're also getting a built-in compass, Nike+ support, and a new battery that offers 5 hours of 3G talk time and 9 hours of WiFi internet use. There are some surprises, too -- holding down the home button now enables a new voice control interface that lets you do everything from make calls to control iTunes, and Apple's touting a new "fingerprint-resistant oleophobic coating." New and end-of-contract pricing is set at $199 for 16GB and $299 for 32GB when it goes on sale June 18th Stateside and in 80 more countries in August -- and the current 8GB 3G will remain on sale for $99, effective immediately. You'll have to pay a bit more if you're mid-contract, though -- $299 for the 3G and $399/$499 for the 3G S.

Re: Computer Talk!!

The camera on the original iPhone isn't that great, I hope the new one is much improved.

Speaking of Apple, does anyone here fiddle with OSx86 stuff?

Re: Computer Talk!!

The new one is 3 megapixel. Tap to focus and auto white balance....still no flash. I've yet to see a phone with optical zoom rather than digital zoom.

Anyone noticed the recent HP laptops? The designs are getting uglier and uglier.....I mean the artwork on the computer.

Interesting news on Palm Pre, courtesy of Engadget.
Pre sets first day and first weekend device sales records for Sprint, almost ruins a wedding
Quote:
As of late Sunday, the new Palm Pre became the fastest starter ever for Sprint, setting records both for best first day sales and best first weekend sales, according to a Sprint press release. Unfortunately, Sprint doesn't mention a specific number of devices sold (the best estimate so far is around 50,000), or what device the Pre knocked off the top spot -- we'd say the Instinct, if we had to guess. The rest of the effusive PR is spent on extensive self praise, with CEO Dan Hesse calling the launch "the coming out party for the new Sprint." In between plugs for the Ready Now experience, however, unfolds the bizarre story of a groom-to-be standing in line 15 minutes before his wedding. We don't want to spoil the ending, but let's just say it's got "feel good romcom of the summer" written all over it.
Anyone here know Fallout (game series)? If someone manages to make a useable Pip-boy with all its goody features. I'd be a happy guy.

Re: Computer Talk!!

Heres a summary of COMPUTEX by Taipei Times.

Quote:
Computex, Taiwan’s annual computer trade fair, is a paradise for electronics enthusiasts.

At last week’s edition, there were life-sized displays of microprocessors and cooling fans that would make computer gamers drool; dizzying rows with hundreds of booths displayed components and parts for nearly every electronic device imaginable; and if that got too boring, “booth babes” in short skirts and high heels roved about the exhibition halls, emceed product launches, handed out company-branded freebies and posed for photos — anything to make circuit boards look sexier.

But the exhibition has also become a showcase opportunity for innovative Taiwanese companies. In fact, convention organizers started the Computex Taipei Design and Innovation Awards last year to promote up-and-coming Taiwanese brands.

Here are the Taipei Times’ picks of the latest products from local companies that created a buzz at this year’s Computex, as well as a few stylish novelties.

NETBOOKS: EVEN THINNER AND LIGHTER

“Thin and light” continues to be the mantra for laptop PCs, which are getting slimmer and more energy efficient.

And the craze appears as strong as ever for netbooks, mini-laptops with screens measuring 11 inches and under.

Asus, the creator of the netbook, made a splash in 2007 with a 7-inch screen device called the Eee PC (pronounced ‘e-p-c’). The device’s popularity helped spawn a full-blown product line that was on display at the company’s Computex booth.

The “Seashell” Eee PC units cover all the basics for users who want Internet functionality above all. A few of the latest models on display were the EeePC Seashell 1008HA and EeePC Seashell 1005HA, which have 10-inch screens, weigh just over 1kg and sport an outer casing with a smooth surface and round edges; Asus claims a battery life of up to six hours.

While these book-sized PCs are great for portability, the keyboards can feel a little cramped. But the EeePC Seashell 1101HA, which was announced at Computex, strikes a nice balance; it has a 11.6-inch screen and weighs 1.38 kg. The keyboard looks full-sized and typing seemed faster and smoother compared to the 10-inch models I tried.

Asus claims a battery life of up to 11 hours on a single charge, thanks in part to the new Intel Menlow chip. But this remains to be seen until after the device’s release in Taiwan in the fall. The specs are similar to the 1008HA and 1005HA: 1GB of RAM, 160GB of hard drive storage, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, and Windows XP Home.

But one of the more eye-catching products at Asus’ booth wasn’t a laptop — it was a keyboard that’s actually an “all-in-one” computer. The EeeKeyboard PC EK1542 packs everything into a standard-sized, wireless keyboard: audio speakers, an Intel Atom processor, 1GB of RAM memory, and SSD hard drive with either 16GB or 32GB storage, and a miniature display screen.

The 5-inch screen is located where the numeric pad is normally found on a keyboard. The screen is touch-sensitive and brings to mind the icon-based interface of the iPhone or Google’s G1 phone. The computer runs on Windows XP, which can also be viewed on the screen and was surprisingly easy to navigate using my finger.

Acer is equally on top of the netbook game — the company’s latest, the 11.6-inch Aspire 751, can be seen as a direct competitor to the larger EeePC Seashell. It has virtually the same specifications, but claims a slightly lower battery life of eight hours.

In playing around with the demo models, I preferred the smoothness of the 751’s keyboard to the slightly rougher finish on the Eee PC notebooks. Typing felt more fluid on Acer’s model, with a soft, barely noticeable click.

TRADITIONAL LAPTOPS LOSE A LITTLE WEIGHT, TOO

At this year’s Computex, Intel heavily promoted its ultra low voltage (ULV) chips, which allow laptop producers to slim down the traditional-sized models and provide better battery life.

Acer is using the ULV chips in its Aspire Timeline series, a set of 13.3-inch, 14-inch and 15.6-inch laptops that the company says have achieved a new balance between weight and energy efficiency.

The 13.3-inch Aspire 3810T weighs 1.67kg and claims a battery life of up to eight hours. When closed, the body is tapered so that it’s 29mm at its thickest and 24mm at its thinnest.

The Timeline series also has a “multi-gesture” pad; pinch your fingers on the mouse pad to zoom in and out of pages or scroll up and down on a page or folder. The feature is attractive but doesn’t work very well — it was hit or miss on the various demo models at Acer’s booth and feels awkward compared to the Macbook.

All in all, the Timeline series looks like it will get the job done for those who mostly use office programs and Internet browsers. In terms of specs, all models come with 2GB of RAM, a 320GB hard drive, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. DVD drives aren’t available for the 13-inch model, and Intel Core 2 Solo chips are the standard for the line. But Core 2 Duo — which allows for more powerful and faster computing — is available as an option for the 13-inch and 14-inch models.

The new Acer laptops are available now in Taiwan and come with either Windows Vista Home Basic or Home Premium. But it might be worth waiting for the late October release of Windows 7, which improves on some of Vista’s annoying quirks.

A few more notable new laptops included Asus’ 13.3-inch UX30 and MSI's X-Slim series, both of which have a sleek, ultra-slim form-factor similar to the Macbook Air.

The X-Slim is currently available in North America from US$600 to US$1,000, according to a company representative.

NOT JUST COMPUTERS/ ON THE PERIPHERY

While PC manufacturers make the most noise on the exhibition floor, Computex is also a good opportunity for start-ups and small companies to show off some interesting and novel products.

Have too many business cards? Penpower Technology offers a solution for the entrepreneur or anyone who has to manage a lot of contacts.

WorldCard is a small scanner built for digitizing business cards. You hook it up via USB to a computer, scan the card, and the accompanying software converts and stores the information for programs like Address Book (for Mac) or Microsoft Entourage. The data can also be saved in vCard, text, and html formats.

Penpower’s demo model at Computex was pretty snappy — the cards scanned in what felt like five seconds, and all of the information — company name, address, cell phone and e-mail, appeared on the WorldCard software immediately afterwards.

The world is now your screen thanks to Aiptek’s PocketCinema V10 Plus, a handheld projector that projects video or images up to 100cm. You can plug in just about any device with an AV output jack: ipods, digital cameras, camcorders or mobile phones. The device, which uses an LED light, is about the size of a TV remote control. The V10 Plus also plays music that you can store on one gigabyte of internal storage.

It’s a fashion accessory, it’s a storage device: Pretec has dressed up some USB flash drives with bling. Its I-disk Sparkling is a necklace pendant adorned with Swarovski crystals.

For the kids (and kids at heart), there’s Pretec’s I-disk Smelly Tofu USB drive, which has a picture of cartoon figure called “Smery.” The drive also comes with a mini figurine of Smery, who has a square-shaped piece of tofu for a head.

But A-Data does Pretec one up with a USB drive that’s cute and useful. The T806 Kissing Octopus Couple, a pair of mini Octopus figurines with detachable USB drives, doubles in function as magnets. The USB drive can be pulled out of the Octopus’ mouth, and reversed so the USB side sticks out of its mouth.

On the environmentally friendly side, ATP Electronics has the EarthDrive, a waterproof USB drive made out of recycled materials. ATP claims it as a world first, and says it will donate part of its profits to an environmental organization devoted to planting trees.

Computex buzz: are smartbooks the next big thing?
Last year Computex was all about the netbook. But now the buzz has shifted to the confusingly named “smartbooks,” which were introduced at this year’s exhibition. The devices are basically netbooks but even smaller with different components.

Smartbooks will require less power, thanks to a high-performance microprocessor based on the ARM chip architecture, which is already used in smartphones. Many netbooks currently use Intel’s Atom chip.

Qualcomm, which manufactures an ARM chip called Snapdragon, says smartbooks will have a battery life between eight and 10 hours and include Internet use and 3G connectivity. Current netbooks yield an average of two to four hours.

Smartbooks can also be built to be thinner than netbooks, as the ARM-based chips don’t require a cooling fan. Another factor that reduces both cost and energy consumption is the operating system: for the moment ARM chips are only compatible with Linux-based operating systems, which includes Google Android.

There are no details available on exact release dates, but Qualcomm says to expect to a device towards the end of the year from various manufacturers.

They're really gunning for a hard target, but then again its Acer. Lower prices could win them the position.

Acer targeting top five smartphone spots by 2012

http://www.taipeitimes.com/News/biz/.../17/2003446414

Quote:
Acer Inc (宏碁), the world’s third-largest PC maker, said yesterday it aimed to ship 20 million handsets in 2012 and become one of the world’s top five smartphone providers.

The PC maker launched its first smartphone in April, 12 months after merging a local handheld device maker — E-Ten Information System Co (倚天) — as part of its diversification into the smartphone market, which offers faster growth and better margins.

“We want to be the world’s top 5 smartphone makers in the next three to four years,” Aymar de Lencquesaing, president of Acer’s Smart Handheld Business Group, told a media briefing in Taipei.

To reach this goal, Acer would have to grab about 6 percent or 7 percent of the market, Lencquesaing said.

By 2012, Acer hopes to sell 20 million smartphones, he said.

Smartphone shipments are expected to grow more than 22 percent next year after increasing by a mild 3.4 percent this year because of the global recession, market researcher IDC said.

In comparison, shipments of conventional phones are expected to rise 7.5 percent next year after contracting 10 percent this year, IDC said.

Acer is in talks with global telecom operator to sell its smartphones at an affordable price of between US$40 and US$50 per unit by bundling them with their services and subsidies, Acer vice president Roger Yuan (袁祖興) said.

The price could lure feature phone users to switch to smartphones, he said.

“Singapore will be the first market for Acer to sell its smartphones through local telecom operators. We see that happening this or next month,” Yuan said.

The company plans to launch 10 models this year, including one running Google’s Android system.

Acer said it hoped to sell half a million phones this year.
I'm not so sure about Nokia making its way up to the "smartphone" major sellers, but I'm sure Samsung is getting there. I still have no idea why Nokia bothers making music phones, when they know they can't beat Sony Ericsson for music phones. What happened to the old Nokia???

Samsung, Nokia heat up smartphone contest

http://www.taipeitimes.com/News/worl.../17/2003446368

Quote:
The world’s two largest cellphone makers, Nokia and Samsung Electronics Co Ltd, unveiled new phones on Monday, offering features comparable to iPhone and Pre, but at lower prices.

In the last two weeks Apple Inc’s launch of an updated version of iPhone and Palm Inc’s Pre model have heated up competition in the sweet spot of an otherwise shrinking industry.

“What is clear is that we are heading to one of the most competitive fourth quarters we have had,” Gartner analyst Carolina Milanesi said.

The holiday-fueled fourth quarter is usually the strongest sales season for handsets, and vendors launch their top models in time to reach the sales peak in the October-to-December quarter.

The cellphone market volume is expected to fall about 10 percent this year as recession dampens consumer demand, but the market for smartphones is expected to rise by between 10 percent and 20 percent, boosted by new and attractive models from many of the top vendors.

“Consumer demand for more capable devices seems to be accelerating despite the general economic doom and gloom,” said Ben Wood, a research director at CCS Insight. “Samsung and Nokia are playing smart by offering these sorts of products at punchy price points.”

Samsung revamped in one go its smartphones portfolio, unveiling four new models for its Omnia range — the Omnia II, the OmniaLITE and two OmniaPRO models, all using Microsoft Corp’s Windows Mobile software.

Samsung also launched a new mass-market “Jet” model on Monday, which differs from some 150 phones it launches per year with its full touch screen, a next-generation display and improved processor to deliver fast mobile Internet access.

Top cellphone maker Nokia launched three new handsets on Monday, including a new touch-screen model — the 5530 Xpressmusic — that would sell for 199 euros (US$280) before subsidies and taxes, starting next quarter.

“Nokia is trying to address the very competitive mid-range space given the prices of the Pre and the new iPhone,” Milanesi said.

“Nokia can also benefit from a lower contract tariff than these two devices have, which will make the products more competitive, but certainly not offering a comparable user experience,” she said.

The cellphone industry saw its worst-ever quarter in the first three months of the year, with sales falling 14 percent year-on-year and Nokia posting its first quarterly loss.

Lee Don-joo, head of sales and marketing at Samsung’s mobile unit, said he was hopeful phone sales would decline by between 8 percent and 9 percent this year across the industry, slightly less than the firm’s official expectation of a 10 percent drop.

“In the second half ... I do not see any special surge in demand. However, there is a small sign of recovery of the general economy. Hopefully, the mobile industry also will recover some,” Lee Don-joo said.

Re: Computer Talk!!

Sony Ericsson is losing money from every orifice in the body. I don't necessarily give them a good chance to survive, not without making a major policy shift to smartphones, and away from feature phones. Already they're showing a new Sony Walkman that is powered by Google's Android.

Nokia is actually the world leader in smartphones by a technicality, because they installed Symbian in a large base of their T9 keypad phones. Technically, any feature phone that has Symbian is considered a smartphone, because you can install third party applications of your own choosing on it. But by far most Symbian phones are used no differently from feature phones.

Samsung is just all over the place, with no vision, releasing all sorts of Windows Mobile, Android, Symbian and proprietary OS smartphones with Java. Its like they refuse to take a stand on which platform they want, and just blows into any direction of the moment. That's why they don't have the brand value of Apple or Blackberry.

It is losing money because it makes too much phones....too many models. XPERIA 1 or whatever it was called, wasn't as good as expected.

Technicality......lol....perhaps they should update the definition of smartphone???

Yea your right about Samsung. They make anything they see, well most things anyway.

Anyway, Acer has released a thing called REVO, not sure if you've heard about it already. But apparently its one of the smallest desktops, able to put on a LCD monitor. Its in trad. chinese but the main point is the size of REVO on the pictures shown on that link.

Does anyone know what Huawei's consumer products are like?

China's Huawei Rides the Smartphone Wave
The Chinese company launches two new phones, one powered by Windows Mobile and the other by Android

China's Huawei Rides the Smartphone Wave - BusinessWeek

Huawei Technologies yesterday showcased two new smartphones at CommunicAsia—the Android-powered U8230 and the C8000 supporting Windows Mobile.
The U8230 allows users to switch between full and half QWERTY keyboards and to navigate programs via a 3.5-inch LCD touch screen. The handset uses the Google Chrome browser which supports a variety of Google applications such as Google Maps, Google Search and Google Talk.
The battery has a capacity of 1500 mAH, which the companies claims is the the longest battery capacity among Android-powered handsets currently available.
The C8000 has a 3D menu interface and a unique independent display adapter that enables the smooth presentation of video files and DVD-quality pictures on a 2.8-inch touchscreen. With optimized power management, Huawei says the handset is capable of playing video files continuously for six to eight hours.
After joining the Open Handset Alliance last year, the company has quickly expanded its line of high-end handsets powered by Android and Windows Mobile.
Glory Chueng, spokesperson for Huawei Terminals said: "These two models take the interactivity experience of smartphones to a whole new level."
She said Huawei plans to launch a series of touchscreen handsets that support W-CDMA, CDMA and TD-SCDMA standards in the second half of 2009.

Microsoft’s Ballmer downplays Bing buzz, expectations

Quote:
Microsoft chief Steve Ballmer on Wednesday downplayed expectations for the success of the newly launched Bing search engine, but said the company was committed to challenging Google over the long-term.

“When you’re sitting there as we are in the search base, you’ve got 8 percent share and there’s a kind of a big dog competitor out there in the market place, you can do very big things,” Ballmer said.

The initial response to Bing had been “very good,” Ballmer said, but it would not displace Google anytime soon.

“I don’t want to overset expectations. We’re going to have to be tenacious and keep up the pace of innovation over a long period of time,” Ballmer told an economic summit in Detroit, Michigan. “We may be successful, we may not, but we can’t be successful without being committed to changing things, changing the approach, changing the business model and you can’t give up in six months, or a year or two years.”

Microsoft said that Bing, unveiled at the end of last month, is designed to intuitively understand what people are seeking on the Internet and challenge online king Google.

The US software colossus described Bing as a “Decision Engine” aimed at helping people make buying decisions, plan trips, research health matters or find local businesses.

Bing’s launch came as Google and Yahoo announced refinements to their search services and the launch of a Wolfram Alpha query engine that delivers answers instead of lists of Web sites.

Bing replaces MSN Live Search, which has languished in a distant third place behind market-leading Google and second-place Yahoo.

Bing relies on algorithms and key words to provide results for online searches but has infused some semantic technology that deduces intended meanings of phrases, according to Microsoft.

Online tracking firm comScore said on Wednesday that Microsoft saw its share of search result pages in the US continue to climb during the second week of Bing’s introduction.

Microsoft Sites’ share of search result pages in the US increased to 12.1 percent from June 8 to June 12, up three percentage points from the May 25 to May 29 period prior to Bing’s introduction, comScore said.

Last month Google grabbed 65 percent of the US search market followed by Yahoo with 20.1 percent and Microsoft with 8 percent.
